Leonid Feldman to speak
at A.A. Selichot Service
The entire Jewish community is
invited to hear Leonid Feldman,
one of the most dynamic speakers
on the Jewish scene today. Feld
man will bring to Ahavath Achim
Synagogue a timely and poignant
message prior to the Selichot Ser
vice on Saturday night. Sept. 27.
The Selichot Service ushering in
the High Holiday season will begin
at midnight and will be conducted
by Rabbi Arnold Goodman, Rabbi
Marvin Richardson and Cantor
Isaac Goodfriend assisted by the
High Holiday Choir. It is a tradi
tionally beautiful service and a sig
nificant prelude to the “Yamim
Noraim,” the Days of Awe. Feld
man will address the congregation
at 10:30 p.m., following a coffee
hour beginning at 10 p.m.
A remarkable young man hav
ing a profound effect on American
Judaism, Feldman is a living ex
ample of the drama of modern
Jewish history. In his 28 years, he
has experienced total assimilation,
Jewish rebirth, violent anti-Semi
tism, imprisonment in Russia as a
Zionist activist, and freedom in the
Leonid Feldman
West.
In the United States only since
1980, Feldman is already fluent in
English; he lectures throughout
America to Soviet Jews on Juda
ism; and to American Jews on
Soviet Jewry and his own odyssey
to Jewish commitment. He was a
chess master in the Soviet Union,,
holds a master in physics degree
from the Soviet Union, and is cur
rently a rabbinical student at the
University of Judaism in Los
Angeles.
Feldman received no formal Jew
ish education. The only thing he
knew about Judaism was that on
the internal Soviet passport, his
“nationality” was listed as “Jew,”
not Russian. He also knew that
this meant something negative.
At a Soviet university he met a
few young Jews—intellectuals—
who secretly gave him a book on
Jewish history. This was his turn
ing point—the beginning of the
“second life” of Leonid Feldman.
Inspired by what he read, Leo
nid turned to Judaism and found
that it was the source of his iden
tity. This identification with Juda
ism, the Jewish people and Israel
brought him into conflict with the
anti-Semitic Soviet environment.
By age 21, Leonid knew that the
only way he could be at peace with
himself would be to leave the
U.S.S.R. He applied for an exit
visa, was refused, and then began
his struggle with the rigid Soviet
system. The Soviets put him into a
KGB prison where Leonid under
went harsh treatment until his
hunger strike led to his freedom.
Seven years ago, Leonid Feld
man was a Soviet citizen who barely
knew he was a Jew; he was an “A”
student in “Scientific Atheism.”
Today, he is a free man in America,
studying Jewish philosophy and
inspiring thousands with his story.
Feldman is regarded by the Sem
inary faculty as one of the most
outstanding students in its history.
