Congo apologizes to Israel
for making Nazi comparison
by Joseph Polakoff
TSI's Washington correspondent
WAS HINGTON— Congo’s
President Denis Sassou-Nguesso
has apologized to Israel for the
statement by Congolese Foreign
Minister Antoine Ndinga-Oba that
South Africa, “the unparalleled
monster of our time, bears no
resemblance to any modern state
unless it is Israel or Nazi Ger
many.” Since the Congo and Israel
do not have diplomatic relations,
the apology was said to be unprece
dented.
After Ndigna-Oba addressed the
United Nations General Assembly
Sept. 17 as the spokesman for the
Organization of Africa Unity at a
special session on Namibia, Israel’s
mission at the U.N. protested to
the U.N.’s president and secretary-
general, sources here said, but it
was the U.S. Ambassador to the
U.N. Vernon Walter who demanded
an apology the day after the speech.
His stiff warning, cleared by the
White House, to Mdinga-Oba in
cluded that if no public apology
ensued. Sassou-Nguesso would not
be welcome to visit the White House
in mid-October when he is to dis
cuss a U.S. aid package. Later he
will go to Ottawa for Canadian
aid.
The apology was included in a
letter from Antoine Mdinga-Oba
to Walters. It said: “The minister
of foreign affairs and cooperation,
on behalf of the president, Denis
Sassou-Nguesso, present their a-
pologies to your excellency and to
the authorities of that country
(Israel) in case the interpretation of
that passage could have equated
Israel to the Nazis, who, as one
knows, cannot be compared to
Jews for evident historical reasons.”
The Israeli mission in New York
said it was “pleased to learn that
the president saw Fit to set the
record straight.”
Herzog rolls out the red carpet
for Egypt’s ambassador to Israel
by Gil Sedan
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Moham
med Bassiouny, Egypt’s new am
bassador to Israel, presented his
credentials to President Chaim
Herzog Tuesday. The ceremonies
at the Presidential residence marked
the restoration of top-level Egyp
tian diplomatic representation in
Israel for the first time since Cairo
recalled its former ambassador,
Saad Mortada, during Israel’s in
vasion of Lebanon in 1982.
Bassiouny remained in Tel Aviv
at that time and for the next four
years as charge d’affaires. His
appointment as ambassador was
announced at the summit meeting
between Prime Minister Shimon
Peres and President Hosni Mubarak
of Egypt in Alexandria two weeks
ago.
The new envoy arrived at the
presidential residence in a car pro
vided by Herzog. As he alighted,
the Egyptian flag was raised and
the Egyptian national anthem was

played. Bassiouny reviewed a mil

was accompanied by members of
the Egyptian embassy staff in Tel
Aviv.
They were greeted by Herzog,
Deputy Foreign Minister Ronni
Milo and David Kimche, director
general of the Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir
is in New York. Bassiouny brought
a message from Mubarak. In his
brief remarks, he expressed hope
that the improvement in relations
between Egypt and Israel would
continue and that a just peace set
tlement would be found in the
Middle East.
Herzog said in reply that he
hoped he would soon be able to
receive the credentials of ambassa
dors from all of the Arab states.
