Only a couple came close to being Lou Grant characters. Most were self-satisfied prouncial men. corrupt and mediocre, no more capable of Lou Grant-type heroism than most small-town Ro- tarians. But the fact that a couple of them had genuine heroism, courage and talent, made Lou Grant believable to me. In real life, one of these editors was a drunken Irishman—don’t ask me if that’s a redundancy— who sang Irish revolutionary bal lads when he was drunk, w hich was often. But he taught me how to get the facts and how to write a story under pressure, and he had a pho tographic memory full of Shakes peare and James Joyce, and his monologues were incredible The other editor who affected me pro foundly was from an upper-crust New England family who were large California landow ners From him I learned about power—its uses, abuses and absurdities “Lou Grant” had many o! the qualities 1 saw in both men. so much so that I never even thought about the obvious. What national ity was Grant? Asner. I learned while talking to him recently, thinks Grant had the map of Israel writ ten all over his face. I asked Asner about this. The "Lou Grant" show —most rea sonable observers concluded—w as kicked off the network TV for pol itical reasons, despite high ratings. I don’t normally watch televi sion or follow Hollywood gossip.
