I Chaim
I People going unto others
by Robyn Freedman Spizman
Calling it a small world underes
timates the possibility of this arti
cle actually happening; but it was
just that...small world and fate.
The incredible woman I was unable
to meet while on the Panim El
Panim Mission in Israel this past
January was now minutes away. I
had learned about her project,
Lifeline, from George Goldman
and Rabbi Emanuel Feldman. Life
line, a project in Israel run entirely
by volunteers, including its founder
Myriam Mendilow, has taught for
the past 23 years the aged, the sick
and the old, skills and crafts which
range from book binding to jewelry
making to metal crafting. In what
was once “no man’s land,” in one
of the poorest sections of Jerusa
lem, this project, which now serves
450, flourishes.
When I heard Myriam and her
husband Adam, who in his own
right is an innovator, having started
the English department at the He
brew University, were staying at
Saul and Adele Blumenthal’s home
in Hilton Head, S.C., where 1 was
vacationing, I immediately called
Editor Vida long distance and asked
if I could write about Myriam.
Next thing I knew I was pool-
side, sharing precious moments with
a woman, 77 years young, or in this
case she’d prefer I say old, whose
vitality radiated. Vacations, rest

and relaxation, are an infrequent
luxury. In fact, this was one of her
first actual vacations in 23 years. I
realized it was a rarity that this
dynamic individual was sitting for
two hours. Her work is her labor of
love. Initiating and running this
operation singlehandedly, Myriam’s
passion for its significance has
undoubtedly created its success.
What motivates a person to ded
icate herself unconditionally five
days a week, voluntarily, to the
human race? Understanding Myriam
Mendilow, is the essence of

L’Chaim. Perhaps this story will
give us some insights, some inspi
ration, into what one person can
achieve.
Twenty-three years ago, Myriam
was second in charge of a large
children’s school. She recalls her
shock—as she would pass on her
way to school each day—the old
people begging on the street corner.
Crawling to catch a coin, they sur
vived off their begging. Myriam
was equally disturbed by the child
ren’s rejection of them. They would
surround the old and laugh,
iaugh.
Myriam, questioning her job of
teaching reading and writing, longed
to teach a greater lesson. To edu
cate the young to accept the old
and to teach the community that
these people don’t need to be thrown
a penny...we must avoid creating
dependency.
Thus, Myriam’s goal was two
fold. She quit her well-paid job
because of her love for the young,
her desire to educate them, and
secondly to bring knowledge to the
old, the disabled, that they have
their minds and are capable, worth
while human beings.
When Myriam first began talk
ing to the aged along the streets,
they resisted. She was called a mad
woman...“I was mad,” she stated,
“because I didn’t fit into a com
munity which says, ‘How much is
he worth in terms of dollars?’ I
earn nothing, but believe worth
is what people are, not what they
earn.”
Still, as she approached the old
she was called names and spat
upon. They didn’t know how to
speak to Myriam. Her first victory
came when she went to the rabbi in
the district and asked if she would
invite the old to the synagogue for
Tu B’Shvat, the Festival of the
Trees. She brought tea and biscuits
and went house-to-house in the
name of the rabbi and succeeded.
She was finally accepted as non
threatening and continued her invi
tations as she established a meeting
