Mike Goldgar, Grandparents Day founder, dies at 67

Mike Goldgar, 67, of Peachtree
City died Thursday, Sept. 25.
Graveside service was held Fri
day, Sept. 27, at Rose Hill Ceme

A retired Atlanta businessman,
Goldgar formed the National
Council for Observance of Grand
parents Day Inc. in 1978. A year
later, then-President Jimmy Carter
signed a proclamation designating
the first Sunday after Labor Day
as National Grandparents Day.
In the early 1970s he founded the
Northside Airport Express and was

Shirley D. Abromowitz, 56, of
Englewood, Ohio, died recently.
Rabbi Samuel Fox and Reverend
Hyman Chodos officiated at the
funeral.
A graduate of the University of
Georgia, she held a masters degree
in education from Miami Univer
sity in Oxford, Ohio. She taught at
Stebbins High School in Ohio for
over 25 years. A member of Engle
wood’s Beth Jacob Synagogue, she
was also a member of the sister
hood and of Hadassah.
Survivors include her husband,
Martin Abromowitz; daughters,
Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Margolis of
Cleveland, Ohio, and Anne A-
bromowitz of Dayton, Ohio; son.
Dr. Howard Abromowitz of Pitts
burgh; brother, Abraham David
son of Cochran, Ga.; sisters, Gol
die Bailey of Vidalia, Ga., and
Fannie Garber and Lillian Galler,
both of Atlanta; and five grand
children.

Myron“Mike” Goldgar was born
on April II, 1911, in Birmingham,
Ala., home of his maternal grand
parents. He was the son of Ben
jamin Goldgar a Macon account
ant, and Annie Shapiro Goldgar,
a founder and first president of
Macon Hadassah.
He attended Georgia Tech and
New York University and had an
early career as a copywriter for
several major New York advertis-
Martin Spilky
Martin Spilky, 72, of Atlanta,
formerly of Chicago, died Mon
day, Sept. 29.
Funeral was held Wednesday,
Oct. I, at Green Lawn Chapel, with
Rabbi Arnold Goodman and Can
tor Isaac Goodfriend officiating.
Interment was in Greenwood
Cemetery.
A retired self-employed salesman
in Chicago, he was employed by
Atlanta Blue Print and Graphics
Co. in Atlanta. He was a member
of the Jewish War Veterans, a
member of Ahavath Achim Syn
agogue and Club 50.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Goldye Teger Spilky; daughters,
Mrs. Betty Martinez of Albany,
Calif., and Mrs. Diane Johnson of
Atlanta; sisters, Mrs. Isabelle
Cooperman of Denver, Col., and
Mrs. Nickey Black of Skokie, 111.;
brothers, Norman Spilky and Saul
Spilky, both of Encino, Calif.; and
two grandsons.

Before moving to Atlanta in
1959, he created and operated “The
American Dream” historical exhibit
which toured the country’s depart
ment stores.
Survivors include three sons,
David Goldgar of Jackson, Miss.,
Dirk Goldgar of Hopewell, N.J.,
and Dean Goldgar of Atlanta;
daughter, Mrs. Deborah Barber of
Birmingham; brothers, Harry
Goldgar of New Orleans and Bert
Goldgar of Appleton, Wis., and
three grandchildren, Jennifer and
Lori Barber of Birmingham and
Daniel Goldgar of Jackson.
Mrs. Rose M. Misrie
Mrs. Rose Massey Misrie, 88, of
Richmond, Va., died Wednesday,
Sept. 24.
She was the mother of Esther
Grosswald of Atlanta.
Graveside service was held
Thursday, Sept. 25, at Beth El
Cemetery in Richmond.
Mrs. Misrie was a member of the
Beth El Sisterhood and the Beth
Shalom Jewish Home. She was an
accomplished cook of Sephardic
dishes and regularly helped pre
pare foods for bazaars and meet
ings.
Other survivors include a son.
Max Massey of Spartenburg, S.C.;
daughters, Rena Shaab of Deal,
N.J., and Mildred Liniado of Rich
mond; sister, Esther Salem of New
York City; and Atlanta grandchil
dren Rael, Morton and Dick Gross
wald, Phyllis Madans and Ralph
Liniado; as well as other grand
children and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anabelle Reisman Samet,
91, of Atlanta died Wednesday,
Oct. 1.
Graveside service was to be held
Friday, Oct. 3, at Greenwood
Cemetery, with Rabbi Arnold
Goodman and Cantor Isaac Good-
friend officiating.
She was the widow of Louis
Samet. She was a past president of
the Ahavath Achim Synagogue and
was active at the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center.
Survivors include a son, Dr.
James F. Samet of Mableton, Ga.;
sisters, Mrs. Pauline Borochoff and
Mrs. Rose Klotz, both of Atlanta;
two grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
