U.S. rabbi hopes to preserve
E. German Jewry with visits
NEW YORK—An American
rabbi is “hopeful” about revitaliza
tion efforts toward preserving East
German Jewry as he prepares for
his third annual visit there, the
American Jewish Committee has
learned.
Rabbi Ernst Lorge, retired spir
itual leader of Temple Israel, Sko
kie, Ill., will again officiate at High
Holiday services beginning Oct. 3,
Rosh Hashana, and concluding at
sundown Oct. 13, on Yom Kippur,
in an AJC-sponsored visit to East

two young men, and at the naming
ceremonies of two female infants,

future generations.”
About 100 to 150 of the city’s
400 Jews are expected to attend the
services led in German by Rabbi
Lorge, a native of Mainz, Germany.
Fewer than 600 Jews live in the
German Democratic Republic, and
are concentrated in eight cities.

Rabbi Lorge, who was born in
Mainz in 1916, fled as a refugee to
the United Slates in 1936, and was
oidained to the rabbinate in 1942
Berlin.
Since 1982, books, religious
articles, and wine have been pro
vided for the Jews of East Berlin by
the AJC. In 1983, a delegation of
AJC leaders met with Dr. Peter
Kirchner, president of East Ber
lin’s Jewish community, and learned
that the group had no rabbi. The
delegation, the first American com
munal group to meet with Jewish
officials in East Berlin, consequent
ly arranged for Rabbi Lorge’s visit.
Last year’s visit had particular
significance for Rabbi Lorge. He
found among the youth a renewed
interest in observing their tradition
and acknowledging their heritage.
He said: “Generally the younger
element does not exist among East
German Jews in number; however,
the spirit of the youth transcends
the age factor within the commun
ity.” He voiced pride over two

PARIS(JTA)—Msgr. Hillarion
Capucci, the former Greek Catholic
Bishop of Jerusalem who was sen
tenced to 12 years’ imprisonment
in Israel for smuggling arms into
the country, has been allowed to
meet Georges Ibrahim Abdullah,
the terrorist leader suspected of
having staged the murder of Amer
ican military attache Lt. Col.
Charles Ray and Israeli diplomat
Yaakov Barsimantov in 1982.
It is generally believed that the
French authorities allowed the

Capucci, who was sentenced in
1974, met with Abdullah in Paris’
top security prison La Same where
the terrorist is being held incom
municado. Even his lawyers have
not been allowed to see him since
his transfer to Paris.
Capucci, who lives in Rome and
travels with a Vatican diplomatic
passport, has played an active role
in various secret negotiations and
is known for his close personal
relations with Syrian President
Hafez Assad and Iran’s Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini.
The French radio quoted Arab
sources as saying that Capucci
came to Paris at the invitation of
the French authorities. He also
met on several occasions with the
Minister for Security and Police
Robert Pandraud.
Premier Jacques Chirac has twice
pledged that he will “not yield to
terrorist blackmail.” He also said
there will be no negotiations with
the terrorists and that “those guilty
(of the attacks) and those who
manipulate them will be crushed
wherever they may be."
