Acapulco became internationally
known in the 1950s as a favorite of
the jet set. “It’s a good place to
live,” said Garfinkle, one of the
leaders of the small Jewish com
munity which has a few former
Israelis. Like many of the Jews in
Acapulco, Garfinkle has a jewelry
store on the main street. He says
just because there are so few Jews
does not mean that the ones here
don’t try to stick together.
With American Jews coming here
in numbers, there are usually two
seders at the El Presidente and the
Posad Del Sol, two fine hotels.
Garfinkle told me that the
American Jews do come here to
buy apartments. Besides the cli
mate, they find the people friendly
and warm. Joseph Beck, another
jeweler from Israel told me he
never lelt anti-Semitism in Mex
ico. He talks a great deal about
Israel and in his shop there is a
Jewish National Fund box proudly
displayed as there are in many Jew
ish stores.
On to Guadalajara. Just tell the
taxi driver you want Yaquis Avenue,
No. 651. That is the address of the
Jewish Community Center in Gua
dalajara. That is where you will
find Jews.
If you know English, Hebrew,
Spanish or Yiddish, you’ll certainly
manage. Because someone at this
beautifully kept center will speak
one of those languages. On any
given day, especially on the week
end, there are American Jews,
Mexican Jews and even visiting
Israelis here.
There are about 250 Mexican
Jewish families in Guadalajara, the
city of roses and Mexico’s second
city.
Why did Jews come here in the
past to this city which is very
important because it is where roads
and railroad lines converge. Cities
in South America were attractions
for Jews and while about 90 per
cent of the Jewish population lives
in Mexico City, some Jews wanted
to try their luck elsewhere. Actu
ally, many of the new immigrants
began their careers as peddlers
with packs on their backs. One Jew
told me his father came from Minsk.
Like many, he moved from place
to place, settling in Guadalajara
because of its climate and friendly
population, and besides, business
was good.
Guadalajara has a population of
about 2.5 million, including 25,000
resident Americans. It is a pretty
city, located on a deep broad table
land, almost surrounded by moun
tains and cut by deep gorges.
People cling to Guadalajara
because of its climate, one of the
best in the world; its people, the
Tepaliosare, are proud of their
city, its history and traditions.
Guadalajara is northeast of
Mexico City, the capital of the
State of Jalisco, and is described as
a “mixture of the old and the new,
a colonial city with modern ideas
and progress."
Guadalajara is the home of
mariachi music and it has fine

There are some American Jew

Being Jewish and living in a
town or city with a small Jewish
population is never easy, no matter
if the country is the U.S., Mexico
or Brazil. But in Guadalajara, the
Jewish community is blessed with
a fine community structure and
activities, and they welcome visi
tors.
