A hug for good health
Ida Milgrom (center), recently permitted to leave the Soviet Union and join her son Natan (Anatoly)
Shcharansky in Israel, gets a hug from her daughter-in-law, Avital, after getting a check-up by Dr. Mervyn
Gotsman, head of the cardiology department of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center at Ein
Karem. Gotsman said the mother of the former Soviet dissident is in “satisfactory” condition.
Teshuva: Maintaining the connection
Adapted from the works of Rabbi Menache.n M.
Schnecrson. the l.ubaxitcher Rcbbe. by Rabbi
Yossi New. Chabad ol Georgia
Introduction: The following is a
scattered series of ideas, concepts
and analogies excerpted and adapt
ed from a long and profound essay
on a somewhat mystical topic. For
a proper examination of the ideas
and their inter-connection the read
er is referred to the original.
The Rope: Sidra Ha'azinu is
often read on the Shabbat between
Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
The Sabbath is called Shabbat
Shuva, a Shabbat connected with
the command of Teshuva, sincere
repentance and return. A signifi
cant verse in the Sidra is "...For the
portion of G-d is his people, Jacob
is the lot of his inheritance..." The
Hebrew word for “lot” is chevel
which can also mean “a rope.”
Chassidic teachings explain the
verse as indicating the relationship
between the soul and its source
within G-d; the relationship or
connection is like that of a rope,
one end of which is tied “above”
(the source) and the other attached
“below” (man’s soul).
The connecting rope between
soul and G-d is woven of 613
threads, each one corresponding to
one of the mitzvot. Transgressing
any one mitzva cuts that particular
thread. Transgressing a major pro
hibition punishable by koress brings
about a break in the overall rope of
connection. (This itself is the pun
ishment; the word koress means to
be cut-off, and the punishment is
that the connection between the
soul and its G-dly source is im
paired).
The Breath of Life: Another
analogy to the connection of the
soul with its source centers around
the creation of Man: “...and he
blew into his nostrils a nesharna
(soul) of life...” Chassidism explains
this as a continuous process. At a
certain level of soul a continuous
“inbreathing” of the soul, from G-
d into man, is required. But if a
sheet of some hard material is
placed in the path of the breath, the
blown air will not reach its target.
Sin is analagous to the sheet of
material; it “blocks” the G-dly
breath blowing into the nostrils of
man.
Never too late: Man always has
the capacity for Teshuva: The
“source of the soul” does not be
come completely entrapped within
the area of evil and can always be
rescued from it. When the person
has sincere remorse for his deeds
and good resolutions for the future
he rescues the source of his soul
from evil. In doing so he contrib
utes to “rescuing” the Shechina
(G-d’s Divine Presence) from the
state of galus (exile), which in turn
leads to the complete and true
redemption through our righteous
Mashiach (the Messiah).
