Gary Metzel, general conference
chairman, called this the most suc
cessful of the conferences presented
in this series.
The rabbinic staff consisted of
eight Atlanta Reform rabbis plus
five from out of town, including
Athens and Columbus, Ga.; Miami;
Birmingham, Ala.; and Houston.
According to Metzel, this con
ference and the two previous ones
held in 1984 and 1985, have gone a
long way toward dispelling the
“conspiracy of silence” about God
that had heretofore existed between
congregants and their rabbis. Con
ferences such as this one are being
duplicated in all regions of the Uni
ted States. “They help address the
Jewish yearning for spiritual roots
and provide a mechanism for Re
form Jews to explore their own
spirituality,” Metzel said.
