bach, “were our visits to the fami
lies of our sons’ bar mitzva twins.
The Sachs visited Lev and Leah
Shapiro, refusniks for nine years, whose
son Israel twinned with Marc
Sachs. Bob Fischbach visited Leo
nid Yuzefovich and Ekaterina
Glozman, refusniks for five years,
whose son Mark is twinned with
Scott Fischbach.
“What an intense pleasure it
was,” says Bob Fischbach, “to have
had Shabbat dinner with the fam
ily of my son’s bar mitava twin.
Refusniks are greatly moved to
know that our children in the Uni
ted States care enough about the
plight of Soviet Jewry to partici
pate in this symbolic twinning pro
gram. It is hard to believe that this
expression of our religious herit
age, which here in the States we
take for granted, carries such high
risks for Jews in Russia.”
“It is important,” Kathy Sachs
continues, “that all children partic
ipate in the Bar/Bat Mitzva Twin
ning Program. While there is no
guarantee that all letters get
through, many do. Our children
can make a difference in the lives of
their Russian twins.” Those inter

Gerald and Pearlann Horowitz
and Michael and Marcia Schwartz
visited Ilya and Olga Shostakovsky,
refusniks for 13 years, and “adopted”
a refusnik, as part of the Federa
tion’s Soviet Jewry program. Sev
eral of the refusniks visited on this
trip were “adopted” by Atlanta
Jewish organizations.
“We asked Ilya what he needs
most of all,” says Pearlann Horo
witz. “His response was that what
every refusnik needs most of all is
an exit visa.” Michael Schwartz
adds, “Ilya then said that since it is
not possible, at this time, to receive
an exit visa, he does have one other
request: would we mind putting a
note in the Western Wall in Jerusa
lem for him and his family.”
“We have so much to tell the
people in Atlanta about our expe
riences,” says Glenda Minkin. “But
if there is one message that rings
loudest from the Soviet Union, it is

this: visitors become the symbolic
link to freedom for Soviet Jews.”
“It is important for rabbis, He
brew teachers, academicians, and
scientists to visit refusniks. Their
visits help to keep the light of Juda
ism burning and to provide the
professional sustenance that has
been taken away when they lost
their jobs after applying to emi
grate.” “But,” Bob Sherman adds,
“even if you aren’t a rabbi or a
teacher or a scientist, still go to
Russia. Your visits will help to sus
tain the refusniks and fuel their
courage and determination to press
for their freedom and the freedom
of all Soviet Jews who wish to
leave.”
“There is much to do at home,
however,” concludes Jack Horo
witz. “I urge the entire community
to attend the Rally for Soviet Jewry,
Monday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at
The Temple. The rally will be our
community’s opportunity to raise
our voices in unison and send the
message to the Soviet authorities,
through President Reagan: Let Our
People Go! We will have slide
presentations of the refusniks we
visited and those ‘adopted’ by the
organizations; letter-writing; peti
tions; participation by children in
our community; and the feeling of
solidarity that we will create on
behalf of the Jews of the Soviet
Union. Please attend.”
For the three-or four-hour visit,
the refusnik family is in freedom.
When it is time to leave, the refus
nik wryly smiles and says, “It’s
strange to hear you say that you’re
going home to America or that you
will soon be flying to Israel. What
is reality for you is a dream, a hope,
a prayer for us.”
And as the visitor leaves, it is as
if he senses the lowering of the pri
son gates and the turning of the
key.

Please join us this December as we will witness and
