Atlanta chapter is briefed
on AMIT Women’s news
Spccial to The Southern Israelite
The Gesher Tzion-Atlanta Chap
ter of AMIT Women was recently
honored with a visit by Mrs. Fran
Lashinsky, a national vice presi
dent and a member of the execu
tive board of AMIT Women. She
serves as chairwoman of the na
tional membership department.
Members gathered for a covered
dish dinner at the home of Ronnie
Rosengarten and an update of what
AMIT Women is doing.
Founded by the late Mrs. Bessie
Gotsfeld in 1925, it brought forth a
new concept of women’s charitable
activity. AMIT Women now oper
ates 20 major facilities throughout
Israel. Named as Israel’s only offi
cial Reshet (network) for religious
secondary technological education
on the basis of the outstanding
work that had been done in their
schools in Israel. When schools fal
ter in meeting the religious and
educational needs of their students,
AMIT Women undertakes the re
sponsibility of the administration
and curricula determination in these
schools. AMIT Women also accepts
the financial responsibility of im
proving their facilities and updat
ing their equipment.
The children in AMIT schools
reflect the ethnic mix of Israeli
society. The majority of their par
ents come from countries in North
Africa and the Middle East. Most
of the childlren are Israeli-born,
but some are immigrants from Iran,
Syria, the U.S.S.R., Ethiopia and
South America.
The children live in towns and
villages from Haifa to Beersheva.
Their families are large, many with
more than eight children, and many
at the poverty level. Their parents
are mostly semi-skilled or unem
ployed, many with minimal educa
tion. Many children are orphans,
or abused children removed from
their families, particularly where
mental illness is present.
All the schools feature computer
science studies, from basic pro
gramming through highly advanced
biotechnology and computer engi
neering. Additional programs pre
Fran Lashinsky
pare students for careers in auto
mechanics, electrical and practical
engineering—even television tech
nology. Girls can study hairdress
ing, secretarial skills, business,
fashion design, sophisticated
graphics arts, nutrition and cater
ing.
The factor that unites all the
programs is Torah study, which
promotes traditional Jewish values.
Students in AMIT schools visit the
sick, bring meals and fuel in the
winter to the bedridden, and tutor
younger or slower students in the
area.
AMIT Women is the major
women’s religious-Zionist organi
zation in the U.S., with 425 chap
ters across the country. The national
office in New York sends $125,000
monthly to Israel which just covers
basic expenses to run the 20 facili
ties.
AMIT Women is a member or
ganization of the American Zionist
Federation, the coordinating com
mittee for Youth Aliyah, Confer
ence of Presidents, National Con
ference of Soviet Jewry, World
Jewish Congress and World Zion
ist Organization. AMIT Women
operates fully with the United Jew
ish Appeal, supports the State of
Israel Bond Drive, the Jewish Na
tional Fund and JRCR.
Working together with the Israeli
Ministry of Education and local
municipalities, AMIT Women has
recently taken over more schools.
In Rehovot, the Religious Com
prehensive High School went from
an enrollment of 107 students to
470. It was previously under-funded
and neglected. AMIT Women up
graded the school’s equipment,
computer and electronic labs.
AMIT Community Center-Kiryat
Ata in Haifa seves 600-800 chil
dren and adults each week. This is
a social service facility valuable to
the community. After-school activ
ities have computer workshops,
carpentry, electronics, Torah study,
arts and music for children and
adults. AMIT High School-Gush
Dan, is located on Bar llan Univer
sity campus in Ramat Gan. Boys
ages 14-18 study electronics, com
puter programming, biotechnology
and computer engineering using
the University’s labs. Enrollment
has gone from 50 to 600 boys.
AMIT HighSchool-Ramie-Lod,
near the airport, services two
municipalities which border on the
aircraft industry. This school hopes
to raise the level of the students in
this low socio-economic area so
they can get jobs in the local indus
try. It is an extra service to the
community. They recently renamed
the shul there the Zichron Neve
Shalom Shul to honor those killed
at the Istanbul synagogue.
AMIT High School-Beit She-
mesh was taken over due to the
high crime and delinquency rate in
that area^Many families are with
out heads of household.
In short, AMIT Women trains
the hands, the minds and the hearts
of young people who will take their
places as skilled and concerned
members of Israeli society. For
those interested in joining or get
ting more information about the
schools, day care centers, chil
dren’s homes and villages and com
munity services, call Marilyn at
633-1099.
