Atlanta ORT affirms value
at World Union congress
Special to The Southern Israelite
The World ORT Union con
cluded its international congress in
Jerusalem on Sept. 25. Represent
ing the 1,500 members of the At
lanta Region of Women’s Ameri
can ORT was Beth Smith, region
president.
ORT was founded in St. Peters
burg in czarist Russia in 1880 to
help Jews acquire skills enabling
them to improve their standard of
living. This remains the basis of
ORT education today.
Resolutions at the congress cen
tered largely on the need to keep up
with the speed of scientific devel
opment. Consequently, ORT head
quarters in London will be required
to constantly create a new teaching
programs which must be adapted
to the particular conditions in the
many countries of ORT operations.
Biotechnology is a fast-devel
oping field, according to Joseph
Harmatz, director general of the
World ORT Union. Its mysteries
are already being introduced to 15-
year-old pupils at the ORT school
in Ramat Gan, Israel. A school in
Rio de Janeiro will also introduce
the subject.
The congress also resolved to
strengthen the teaching of Jewish
subjects as a means of fighting
assimilation. These efforts have
already shown a great measure of
success in Latin America.
ORT Israel director, Israel
Goralnik told delegates that his
organization has computerized its
entire administrative setup. “At

our pedagogic center we constantly

This year we graduated more 1,000
teachers.”
Goralnik stressed the hopes
ORT has that its $20 million Braude
International Institute of Tech
nology, which is under construc
tion in Carmiel, will be a strong
factor in drawing industry and
population to the Galilee.
Three months ago Goralnik
submitted plans to the Education
and Defense ministries for extend
ing technical education to 15 years
and granting student exemption
from army service until comple
tion of technical education. “If
youngsters join the IDF as gradu
ate practical engineers, this will be
to the army’s advantage,” he said.
This viewpoint was supported by
Chief of Staff of the IDF Gen.
Moshe Levy, who addressed the
delegates from 27 countries at the
ORT School of Engineering. To
stay ahead of our enemies educa
tionally, he said, Israel needs the
backing of diaspora Jewry. “I am
proud of the good relations between
the Israel Defense Forces and
ORT.”
The current budget for ORT is
$100 million, while $20 million is
j allocated to its international co
operation department.
Many of ORTs activities are
paid for by foreign governments
and some even bring in money. In
order to keep pace with inflation
and the ever-increasing needs of
the global ORT program, delegates
discussed various aspects of fun
draising. Sensitivity and commit
ment were obvious when a prop
osal to have delegates pay their
own expenses for attendance at
this and future congresses was intro
duced. This commitment had al
ready been made by the Women’s
American ORT delegates, all of
whom paid their own way so that
the maximum dollars raised by
their 145,000 members throughout
the United States could be utilized
by the ORT program.
As a first-time delegate, Atlanta
Region President Beth Smith ex
pressed pride in the accomplish
ments of local ORT women, who
recognized the magnitude of ORTs
multi-faceted program and rose
above socio-economic pressures
with a special determination that
enabled the Atlanta Region to
achieve not only financial assign
ment completion, but over-sub
scription in 1985-86. Mrs. Smith
stated that the value of her region’s
efforts was brought sharply into
focus during a tour of several ORT
schools ranging from Beth Yeho-
shuah, which takes disadvantaged
youth off the streets and prepares
them for entree into regular high
school programs, to Ramat Gan,
which teaches such courses as
fashion design and gemology, to
the prestigious School of Engineer
ing on the campus of Hebrew Uni
versity in Jerusalem.
ORT received the praise of such
dignitaries as Chaim Herzog,
Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin,
Yitzhak Navon, Ephraim Katzir,
and Moshe Arens, all of whom
addressed the congress.
Additionally, Professor Katzir,
former president of Israel, delivered
the keynote address following his
election as president of the World
ORT Union.
