History project
puts focus on
Birmingham life
The history and heritage of the
Birmingham Jewish community is
being preserved permanently
through the Birmingham Jewish
Federation’s award-winning oral
history project, “Memory Bank;
The Southern Jewish Experience.”
Phase II, “Jewish Life in Bir
mingham, 1900-1970,” has been
completed and will be shown
Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Jewish
Community Center.
Chaired by Esther Levy and
funded by grants from the Ala
bama Humanities Foundation and
the Birmingham Jewish Founda
tion, the project developed taped
interviews from older members of
the community who were born in
Birmingham. The interviews served
as the basis for a slide show which
captures this segment of Jewish
history in an insightful and dra
matic way.
Phase I of the project, which
focused on the experiences of Jew
ish immigrants to Birmingham,
received the Charles Goodall Award
from the Council of Jewish Feder
ations in 1981, for the year’s out
standing program by a Small Cit
ies Federation.
For more information about the
project, call Karen Oster, project
director, at the Birmingham Jew
ish Federation.
