Kids learn about Judaism with Home Start program When the Home Start program was launched, no one could be sure it would succeed. Today no one can doubt that it has. Orders from families, from Atlanta to Homer, Alaska to Bryan, Texas and Laco nia, New Hampshire—from fami lies throughout the country—come in every day. “The response far exceeds our expectations,” reports Elaine Gruenhut, staff person trom the Atlanta Bureau of Jewish Educa tion Inc. “This is a program that introduces Judaism to pre-school children as a joyful and sharing experience for the whole family.’’ I he reasons for the program’s success may best be summed up by two reactions. Parents say that it is just what is needed, and children love it. For the children especially, it is a seven-times-a-year “happen ing” when a package arrives ad dressed to them. A major goal for the Home Start program is family participation so the first mailing, a Starter Kit, includes a 64-page parent hand book which explains the meaning and rituals for each holiday to which the program is themed. For some parents this is a refresher course. For others it is a first expe rience of learning, along with their children. This first mailing also includes a cassette tape of holiday songs and stories which, according to parents, the children never tire of playing. What child doesn’t like a pres ent, especially if it comes addressed in their name. And that is how, as each holiday approaches, a Home Start package arrives. Each one comes in time to learn about, to prepare for and to celebrate Han- uka, Purim, Passover, Shavuot, and of course Shabbat. The fall package combines material for Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Suk- kot and Simhat Torah. In each package there is a story book, illus trated in full color, and a separate play-and-learn magazine for the family to share. The latter has games, puzzles, a simple holiday recipe and crafts. Part of the fall holidays package, for example, in cludes greeting cards to make and a Simhat Torah flag and honey recipes for a sweet year. A child can be enrolled in Home Start at any time and receive the complete cycle of seven holiday mailings. The entire Home Start program is available for $20 includ ing postage and handling.
