CAJE conference provides educators with opportunity Special to The Southern Israelite “I have learned much from my teachers, more from my friends, and from my students most of all.” These words from page one of the Conference on Alternatives in Jew ish Education program book set the mood and predict the content of CAJE II, held in August at the University of Maryland. Cheryl Finkel, headmaster of The Epstein School, was accompanied by teach ers Rae Bellman, Leora Wollner and Barbara Rosenblit. Other Atlantans attended also. CAJE began in 1973 as a grass roots attempt to find alternative approaches to Jewish teaching, to breathe some life into an area that had been static too long. Today, CAJE is an organization that serves principals, teachers— part-timers and full-timers—and laypeople. It is an organization that is dedicated to serving all educators who work long and hard to make Torah work. CAJE sponsors a newsletter and publishes a curriculum guide throughout the year. In addition, CAJE offers teacher work days, workshops and mini conferences throughout the continent. CAJE publishes “Marketplace,” a listing of job opportunities in Jewish education. The organization also sponsors a CAJE curriculum bank which accepts deposits and with drawals of Jewish teaching mate rials and programs.
