Israel Amitai, a leading Israel
media specialist, television producer
and director, lecturer and journal
ist, will be the speaker at the Shea-
rith Israel Synagogue on behalf of
the state of Israel Bonds Shmini
Atzeret Appeal Saturday, Oct. 25.
The announcement was made by
Rabbi Judah Kogen, spiritual leader
of Shearith Israel, and Stephen H.
Merlin, synagogue president.
Considered one of the outstand
ing personalities among Israel’s
present generation intellectuals,
Amitai is a sabra (native-born
Israeli). As a youth, he served in
the Haganah, the underground de
fense forces of the Jewish com
munity in Israel prior to the estab
lishment of the state. In World
War 11, he served in the regiments
organized by the Jewish Agency in
cooperation with the British gov
ernment. He fought in Israel’s War
of Independence, achieving the rank
of captain in the Israel Defense
Forces.
Amitai’s activities in the media
range from television production,
media planning and consulting to
writing news analysis and feature
articles. He has produced and di
rected over 1,000 television pro
grams on public affairs, the arts,
culture and education, as well as
many programs for ethnic groups
in their native tongues. In addi
tion. he has written and published
some 200 feature stories based on
interviews with people representing
different cultural groups.
By profession a journalist, he
was one of the first editors, direc
tors and writers for the radio net
work of Israel’s armed forces, l.ater,
he served as editor of Davar, one of
Israel’s most important dailies, and
of the illustrated magazine D’var
Hashavua. Amitai was a member
of the media corps at the Carter-
Begin-Sadat Camp David talks and
wrote a daily news analysis.
He has written many articles,
radio scripts and ethnic stories,
and co-authored a book.
Amitai took part in a rescue mis
sion in a major earthquake on the
Greek Islands and an expedition
into the jungle along the Amazon
in Brazil.
He speaks six languages and has
traveled and lectured extensively
to audiences in South and Central
America, the Caribbean Islands,
Canada and numerous communi
ties in the United States.
