AJF plans panel discussion
on Tax Reform Act of 1986

The United States Congress has
passed the Tax Reform Act of
1986. This sweeping 1,800-page re
write of the tax code will affect
every taxpayer. A panel discussion
covering the significant tax changes
will be presented on Nov. 3, at 6
p.m. at the Federation offices, 1753
Peachtree Road, according to Elliott
Cohen, co-chairman, Legal and
Tax Committee and program chair
man.
An outstanding group of pane
lists has agreed to explain the tax
provisions that have changed and
to suggest specific steps which
people can take to reduce their tax
burden. Panelists are: Elliott Gold
stein, senior partner, Powell Gold
stein Frazer & Murphy; Ira Hefter,
partner-in-charge, Touche Ross;
Gary Snyder, partner, Minkin &
Snyder; and Martin Isenberg, part
ner, Isenberg and Hyman Associ
ates.
Topics include changes in the
individual incomes tax provisions,
tax shelters, insurance products,
retirement plans and charitable
giving.

Young leaders slate
political discussion
The Young Leadership Council
(YLC) and the Georgia Israel Pub
lic Affairs Network (G1PAN), both
committees of the Atlanta Jewish
Federation, invite the community
to participate in a night of Israeli
and American politics.
The event will take place on elec
tion night (Tuesday, Nov. 4) at
7:30 p.m. at the Colony Square
Hotel in the Georgia Room.

gram which will include remarks
by Yoram Peri, professor of politi
cal science at Tel Aviv University
and a political analyst for Davar,
the Labor Party’s daily newspaper.

the changing of Israeli prime min
isters and the current situation on
the West Bank. •
As the group watches the Amer
ican election results come in,
G1PAN chairman Richard Mitchell
will facilitate an interpretation of
the results focusing on how they
impact U.S./ Israeli relations.
The program is free and open to
the public. A cash bar will be
provided.

Joint program features
U.S.S.R. religious freedom
A unique program on religion in
the Soviet Union will be hosted
jointly by Congregation Shearith
Israel and Morningside Presbyter
ian Church Wednesday, Oct. 22, at
8 p.m. at Shearith Israel.
Two students at Emory Univer
sity, one Jewish, one Protestant,
who have visited their respective
religious communities in the
U.S.S.R., will speak to Christians
and Jews about their experiences.
Their theme for the evening will be
“Liberating God in a Captive Land;
Christians and Jews in the Soviet
Union.”
The students plan to visit the
U.S.S.R. again. To help finance
their next trip, contributions can
be made for that purpose to the
discretionary funds of the rabbi of
Shearith Israel and the minister of
Morningside Presbyterian Church.
There will be no other solicitation
of funds.
