Just you and I alone Adapted from the works of Rabbi Menachem M. Schnecrson, the Lubavitcher Rcbbe. by Rabbi Yossi New. Chabad of Georgia you as the opening of a hall.” King Solomon continues, “My Beloved has hidden, has gone away. ...” The “Beloved” is G-d; Rabbi Schneerson Torah thoughts A king gave the hand of his only daughter in marriage. He asked but one thing of his son-in- law. “Wherever you may be, pre pare for me a dwelling, a place where I can stay when I come to visit you.” The king is G-d. The Torah is His only daughter. All He asks of His son-in-law, the Jewish nation, is to prepare for Him a habitation—an environ ment of Torah-study and prayer where the Shechina, G-d’s pres ence, may dwell. As King Solo mon writes: “The voice of My Beloved knocks, Open up for Me!” The Almighty taps at the heart of the Jew and pleads with him to open up the door even a tiny crack, even “like the point of a needle,” to make even the small est attempt at Torah study and prayer, and G-d promises him, “...and 1 will open (it wide) for and His intention in “hiding” is not to remain hidden and con cealed behind the facade of nature, but that we should seek him. All of this beautiful parable describes the pattern of the month Elul, Rosh Hashana, the Ten Days of Repentance and Yom Kippur, up until the closing prayer of Ne’ilah. During this period G-d is described as being “close,” in a sense “tapping at the door.” As the prophet tells Israel concern ing this season, “Seek G-d when He is to be found, call Him when He is close.” Chassidism describes this period as one in which the fire-source (G-d) comes close to the spark (the individual soul). The pattern continues until the close (and the climax) of Yom Kippur, Ne’ilah, when we reach the highest point of “finding”... Him whom my soul loves. The facade falls; the concealment is no more. The Divine King and His people Israel are one. And this intense unity carries over and finds full expression in Simhat Torah. In the time of the Bais Hamik- dash, 70 oxen were offered on the altar (during the seven-day festi val of Sukkot) representing the 70 nations of the world. Then, on the eighth day of Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah, just one ox and one ram were offered. Says the Midrash: “This may be com pared to a King who made a seven-day feast and invited all the inhabitants of his country ...When the seven days of feast ing were over he said to his beloved friend, ‘now that we have fulfilled our duty for all the in habitants of the country, let us spend a while together, just you and I alone...
