Animated Bible stories now on video tapes
Six animated adaptations of
biblical stories on video cassette
for home use are now made avail
able by the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, central
body of Reform Judaism in the
United States and Canada.
The 30-minute tapes, each an
original production made espe
cially for home video use, are
titled “The Greatest Adventure:
Stories from the Bible.” They are
programming venture of Hanna-
Barbera, the world’s producer of
animated entertainment.
The first six titles in the home-
video series are “Moses,” “Joshua
and the Battle of Jericho,” “David
and Goliath,” “Noah’s Ark ”
“Daniel and the Lion’s Den” and
“Samson and Delilah.”
Each biblical episode is seen
through the eyes of three young
visitors from the 20th century.
To ensure the authenticity of
each of the adaptations, the ser
ies was overseen by an independ
ent panel of religious advisers,
including rabbinical leaders of
the Reform and Conservative
Jewish movements.

The first Italian kosher
restaurant opens in N.Y.
—NEW YORK
Cheers, the only exclusively
Italian kosher restaurant in the
United States, has been serving
capacity crowds since its quietly
opened its doors in midtown
Manhattan this past summer, ac
cording to owners Harvey Gold
berg and Martin Bodner. The
elegantly decorated, bi-level 250-
seat dining establishment has been
turning away 50 to 60 couples
without reservations each night.
“Our dream for many years
has been to create the finest Ital
ian restaurant that would appeal
in taste and ambiance to those
who truly enjoy an unusual din
ing experience,” said Bodner.
“Frankly, the response has been
simply fantastic.”
Cheers features a wide-ranging
menu of Italian specialities cre
ated, tested and perfected by
master chef Robert Stearn, for
merly of Gurney’s Inn at Mon-
tauk and Fraunces Tavern in
New York City.
Both Bodner and Goldberg
have enjoyed successful careers
in the food and restaurant busi
ness before opening Cheers. Bod
ner was manager of food opera
tions for major hotels and res
taurants. Goldberg was manager
for five years of a well-known
kosher restaurant in New York
City and as president of Schech-
ter Glatt Kosher Tours is con
nected with the world famous
Mount Airy Lodge resort where
he caters to more than 1,200
people every Passover.
“We’re committed to excel
lence,” said Goldberg. “A varied
and high-quality menu, super ser
vice, and unequaled ambiance
are our primary goals. And while
no one is perfect, we’re happy
that we’re able to translate our
goals into action. And the reac
tion from our patrons these past
few months has really be grati
fying.”
Cheers is located at 120 West
41st Street, between 6th Avenue
and Broadway.
Contemporary Arts Center, 608
Ralph McGill Boulevard, at 8:30
p.m.
The unconventional five-foot
entertainer appears following
concerts in New York, San Fran
cisco, Boston and Chicago. Her
act, dubbed “not the most politi
cally correct act in lesbian show
business,” takes playful aim at
sexual stereotypes with universal
appeal. The leather-clad Lavner
adds wry humor to her musical
talent, topping the mixture with
poignant monologue.
The performance is co-spon
sored by the Southeastern Arts,
Media and Education Project
(S.A.M.E.), the year-old organi
zation promoting human rights
issues through the arts, and by
Congregational Bet Haverim, the
year-old synagogue serving At
lanta’s lesbian and gay Jewish
community. The Piedmont Pops
Singers, a gay men’s chorus group,
opens the show with its debut
performance.
Tickets for the 220-seat Nexus
Theatre are $8 in advance and
$10 at the door, if available.
Advance tickets are available at
Charis Books, 419 Moreland
Avenue in Little Five Points, and
through members of S.A.M.E.
(378-3701) and Congregation Bet
Haverim (642-3467). Tickets can
be purchased by cash or check,
payable to S.A.M.E.
