He was identified by the hospi tal Monday as Eliahu Schreier, 59, of Moshav Shoresh, near Jerusalem. He has had a liver ailment for seven years and was transferred to Rambam from Hadassah Hospital after his con dition deteriorated. Rambam is presently the only hospital in Israel licensed to perform liver transplants. The operation was performed by Dr. Yigal Kam who was trained in the procedure in Pittsburgh, Pa. Kam said complications oc curred during surgery and the patient will almost certainly need corrective surgery to halt inter nal bleeding. Meanwhile, Kam’s first liver transplant patient, Mira Schich- manter, 40, continued to improve Monday, though doctors said she is still not out of danger. Shichmanter, the mother of two, underwent surgery for 20 hours last Wednesday. She remains in an intensive care unit but is now breathing without the aid of a respirator. Although doctors reported no significant progress in the func tioning of her new liver, they des cribed her condition as “some what improved” on Friday. She is reportedly fully conscious and spoke a few words to her family and physicians. Thursday she sat in an armchair for 30 minutes. Kam said it would be a few more days before he could call the operation a success and three to four weeks before doctors can The Southern Israelite Nov. 5, 1976 Jewish candidates winning re- election and election Tuesday in cluded: Congressman Elliott Levitas who handily recaptured his Fourth District Democratic seat; Cathey Steinberg who will he a new face in the Georgia House; and Mike Nichols, 24- year-old Democrat, who won a House seat. * * * “Our favorite Jimmy Carter has emerged winner and come 1977 he will assume the White House as our national President ...We commend the many public spirited citizens who have shared our views and worked on many levels to bring this candidate into office.” (TSI Editorial). Schichmanter’s family is re portedly considering adding the name of her donor to her name in gratitude for the donor family’s altruistic decision. The donor, a 19-year-old woman soldier from Kibbutz Shaar Ha’amakin, died in a car accident early last week. Prior to Schichmanter’s oper ation, liver transplants were for bidden in Israel by religious authorities because of a technical argument over the definitions of death. In order to donate a liver, the donor’s heart must still be beating, even if the donor is brain dead and artificial means are used to keep the heart beating. In the rabbinical definition of death though, a person is dead only when the heart stops beating. • Sofas • Folding Tables • End Tables • Conference Tables • Storage Cabinets • Typing Tables .. .and More! 1860 Cheshire Bridge Rd.
