Nov. 10.
The meeting, part of an ongo
ing program sponsored by the
Georgia Israel Public Affairs
Network (GIPAN), is free and
open to the public, according to
Richard Mitchell, chairman of
GIPAN.
The purpose of these break
fasts is to help inform and update
the Jewish community about po
litical issues being addressed in
the state of Georgia and in our
nation’s capital. Murphy will
speak about his assessment of the
challenges facing Georgia and
major issues that will be raised at
the General Assembly this com
ing year.
“Last year we sponsored meet
ings with members of the Geor
gia Congressional delegation.
This year we are expanding the
program to include meetings with
our state political leadership,”
said Mitchell.
The next breakfast, scheduled
for Dec. 15, will feature Lt. Gov
ernor Zell Miller. For more in

Russell, known for his rapid
wit, has performed in major clubs
and hotels throughout the coun
try, including the Copacabana,
Concord Hotel, Grossinger’sand
Harrah’s in Reno.
A favorite dais guest at the
famous Frair Roasts, he has been
featured with Victor Borge, Alan
King and David Frost.
Russell is also a staunch sup
porter of Israel and has recently
returned from one of many trips
there. The son of an Orthodox
rabbi, he is a founding member
of the Israel Bonds Ambassa
dor’s Society of Trustees (pur
chasing $10,000 or more in Israel
Bonds); is a longtime Israel Bonds
chairman in Southern Connecti
cut, where he lives; and has par
ticipated in more than a dozen
Bonds missions to Israel.

Jewish Historical Society plans annual conference
“Bagels, Blues and Black
Beans: A Miami Mosaic” and
“Mischpocha Under the Magno
lias” are among the topics that
will be discussed at the 11th
annual conference on the South
ern Jewish Experience, taking
place this weekend in Fort Laud
erdale, Fla.
Sponsored by the 600-member
Southern Jewish Historical So
ciety, the three-day conference
will bring together academicians
and non-professionals, according
to Dr. Louis Schmier, secretary
and co-founder of the society.

“Original research papers will
be read, a standard technique
during conferences of this type,”
said Schmier, who teaches his
tory at Valdosta State College.
He said that he and several
others conceived the idea for the
Southern Jewish Historical So
ciety 11 years ago. “We felt there
was a real need to uncover, pre
serve and disseminate the story
of the Southern Jewish experi
ence,” he said.
During session one, “The Fla
vor or Latin America,” papers
will be presented on “Aspects of
the History of the ‘Portuguese
Jewish Nation’ in the Caribbean”
and “Hotel Cuba.”
During session two, Professor
Schmier will discuss “Hearing
and Seeing Your Past: Tips about
Oral History and Preservation of
Family Photographs.”
The keynote speaker, Stephen
Whitfield of Brandeis University,
will discuss “The Significance of
Southern Jewry” during the final
day of the conference.
