Ahavath Achim Synagogue:

To help Ahavath Achim’s 2,100 mem
ber-families commemorate the congrega
tion’s 100th birthday, volunteer workers
have riffled through hundreds of photo
graphs, letters, documents and the like to
set up three comprehensive exhibits of
memorabilia and history in the built-in,
glass-enclosed cases that line the main hall
way of the Peachtree Battle Avenue syna
gogue.
The first exhibit, which has been on
view since Yom Kippur, shows exterior
and interior shots of the three buildings
that have served as home to Atlanta’s
largest Jewish congregation. Following
the progression of the synagogue’s growth,
the current exhibit begins with AA’s first
synagogue at Gilmer and Piedmont Av
enue, which was home to the congregation
from 1901 to 1921 when it moved into the
Washington Street building. There it
stayed for 37 years until the move in the
summer of 1942 to its present location in
Northwest Atlanta.
“The members of the congregation love
it,” said Doris Goldstein, chairman of the
history and archives committee of the cen
tennial. “They look at it and say‘Oh, 1 was
there. 1 remember that. Look at that. Oh,
that’s me.’”
Goldstein said the committee tried to
select pictures that would strike a respon
sive chord in congregants “so that it would
be very personal to people,” she said.
Ten people are helping her with the
acquisition and cataloging of materials,
which, covering 100 years, is voluminous!
Goldstein, who studied history at Sophie
Newcomb College at Tulane University in
New Orleans, said she enjoys the expendi
ture of time and energy that goes into
setting up historical exhibits.
“I am very interested in history, espe
cially Jewish history,” she said. “This is
my city and this is my synagogue. I’m very
