Temple Sinai
Rabbi David Saperstein will
be the speaker at Temple Sinai’s
Lerhman Shabbat to be held at
8:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. The
special Shabbat is being funded
by the Rabbi Richard Lehrman
Endowment Fund in memory of
the synagogue’s founding rabbi.
Saperstein is co-director and
counsel of the Religious Action
Center. The center is the liaison
between the federal government
and the Reform Jewish move
ment, comprised of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
and the Central Conference of
American Rabbis. He is also an
attorney and an adjunct profes
sor in comparative Jewish and
American law at Georgetown
University Law School.
Saperstein has appeared on a
number of network television
news and talk shows. His articles
have appeared in the Washing
ton Post, the New York Times
and many major general and
Jewish periodicals. He has writ
ten and edited a number of books
for the UAHC, “Critical Issues
Facing Reform Judaism” with
his brother, Rabbi Marc Saper
stein, and three resource manu
als for the Jewish community:
“Preventing the Nuclear Holo
caust: A Jewish Response,” “The
Social Action Manual: A Practi
cal Guide for Organizing and
David Saperstein
Programming Social Action in
the Synagogue” and “The Chal
lenge of the Religious Right.”
Since coming to Washington,
Saperstein has been active in a
number of interreligious coali
tions dealing with issues as diverse
as Israel, civil rights, energy and
the environment, abortion rights
and nuclear disarmament.
He has served as the chairman
of the Washington Interreligious
Staff Council, comprised of rep
resentatives of all major Chris
tian and Jewish religious organi
zations, and IM PACT, the largest
interfaith legislative action net
work in the country.

Beth Shalom
Congregation Beth Shalom is
one of more than 100 congrega
tions across the country hosting
students and faculty of the Jew
ish Theological Seminary of
America in a major Seminary
Centennial event.
Beth Shalom will host Shelly
Weiner ofClaymont, Del. during
the Nov. 7-9 weekend. She will
address the congregation on
behalf of the Seminary.
Shelly is a second-year student
in the Cantors Institute Semi
nary College of Jewish Music at
JTS. She spent the first year of
her cantorial training at the
Seminary’s Midreshet Yerusha-
layim program in Israel and hopes
to graduate in 1990.
The Centennial Shabbat Week
end is part of an array of public
programs marking the Seminary’s
100th anniversary.
