A plea for Soviet Jewry

The following self-explan

District of Columbia Superior
Court as a spokesperson for the
23 rabbis arraigned before the
court on charges of illegally

Forty-two years ago, when I
was 17 years old, my parents, my
oldest and youngest brothers and
myself were all taken in sealed
cattle cars to a place the name of
which I have never heard before.
The name of that place was
Auschwitz.
Not my family alone, but all
the Jewish people of my city of
Satmar were taken to Auschwitz.
Indeed, hundreds of thousands
of my Jewish countrymen were
shipped to Auschwitz day and
night in a great hurry in order to
be gassed and burned to ashes.
It happend in the summer of
the year 1944. World War II was
alreay drawing to its gasping
end. Sensing their impending
defeat, the Nazis doubly intensi
fied the process of the “Final
Solution.” We, the victims, had
no inkling, of the Nazis’ diabolic
plans. We trusted their civility

has his day in court
and civilization.
Now, more than 40 years later,
it has become clear beyond a
shadow of doubt that while the
Nazis methodically and enthusi
astically fanned the ovens of
Auschwitz, the Western Allies
became accomplices to these
heinous crimes by a conspiracy
of their own—the conspiracy of
silence. By now, it has been amply
documented that “the final solu
tion” was no secret at all. It has
been proven by historic research
that the Western Allies were fully
cognizant of the systematic des
truction of European Jewry.
Not only did they do nothing
to stop the killing, but most
countries of the free world tightly
shut their gates refusing shelter
to the very few who miraculously
escaped the world’s largest
slaughter house. Emma Lazarus
must have bitterly wept in her
grave when a handful of 900 of
her co-religionists, passengers of
the refugee ship St. Louis, had
been turned away from these
shores of the United States of
America and sent back to certain
destruction.
The Great Colossus did not
beacon her lamp to those 900
unfortunates who clamored at
her golden door.
Honorable Judge! There is now
a ruthles's tyranny in the Soviet
Union which practices spiritual
genocide against its Jewish citi
zens. The government of the
Soviet Union does not physically
exterminate its Jewish popula
tion. It does, however, stifle their
souls, conscience and human dig
nity. By not enabling them to live
freely as Jews and by denying
their natural right of emigration,
the government of the Soviet
Union is violating not only the
basics of human rights, but also
the tenets of simple decency and
civility.
Honorable Judge! Having both
witnessed and experienced the
ultimate agony of my people, I
cannot stand by silently while my
brothers and sisters in the Soviet
Union are being harassed and
persecuted only because they
refuse to betray their identity and
spiritual heritage. Should I remain
indifferent to their plight, I
would be guilty of no less cal
lousness than those who kept
silent during the Shoah.
It was this overriding consid
eration, Honorable Judge, that
compelled me on March 27 to
come to this city and demon
strate in front of the embassy of
the Soviet Union on behalf of my
people. My conscience is clear. I
do not feel that I have commited
a wrong.

one tree in Israel for each family
member through JNF, which is
responsible for afforestation and
land reclamation in the Jewish
state.
“Trees play an essential role in
Israel’s agricultural development
and in the preservation of her
environment,” noted Peggy Shul-
man, executive direction of JNF’s
Southern Region. “They break
the fierce desert wind velocity
and halt soil erosion, combat
noise and air pollution, and pro
vide security for vulnerable border
roads and communities.”
Ms. Shulman said that Israel
urgently needs to afforest 1,250
acres of land. In the process, JNF
is trying to accelerate its estab
lishment of urban parks and green-
belts, which provide a retreat
from the tensions of modern city
life.
She spoke of various urban
municipalities where JNF has
been concentrating its efforts. In
Tel Aviv, Park HaDarom is being
established to meet the recrea
tional needs of large families
residing near the Ha Tikva quar
ter. Municipal forest parks are
also planned, in cooperation with
local authorities, for built-up acres
on Israel’s coast and in the Galilee
and the northern Negev. JNF, in
addition, is investing considera
ble resources in planting new
woodlands and establishing new
camping grounds, thus increas
ing recreational areas for Israel’s
citizens.
“A successful Green Sunday
will certainly help JNF realize its
critical goals and is especially
important considering Israel’s
current economic climate,” Ms.
Shulman said. “Israel is still
struggling to hold down its infla
tion rate. A Syrian buildup
threatens Israel’s northern border,
which adds to defense expendi
ture. In addition, tourism, a major
industry, has suffered since the
Achille Lauro hijacking and other
terrorist incidents. Given all these
factors, it’s up to Israel’s friends
to ensure that JNFs afforesta
tion program continues.”

volunteer, or to make an early
contribution, call the JNF office
