Page 8 THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE November 7, 1986 Holocaust paintings on display at Zachor A series of six paintings by Milwaukee artist Florence Bern, depicting scenes from the Holo caust, are on display at the Zachor Holocaust Center, lower level, Atlanta Jewish Community, 1745 Peachtree Road. Mrs. Bern, one of whose chil dren, Eric, is a professional pho tographer in Atlanta, describes her Holocaust series by saying: “I had very strong emotions while painting this series inasmuch as my mother’s family was, except for two male members who were in the Russian Army, completely annihilated and most likely bur ied at Babi Yar. I found myself crying bitterly as the scenes emerged from my brush. I delib erately muddled the colors to be ugly and depressing to match my state of mind. 1 worked rather feverishly to get it over with, which I did in two weeks. It worked as a catharsis for some thing within me that was never expressed before.” Bern is a lay leader in the Mil waukee interfaith community. She has exhibited her work in a number of museums, galleries and Jewish community buildings in the Milwaukee area and else where around the country. She works in a variety of media to create her painting and has also done work in graphic design. She says, “My art involvement has been eclectic, dictated by my involvement in the community at large as well as the Jewish commu nity.” The Zachor H olocaust Center, staffed by volunteers, is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-noon; and Sundays from 1-3 p.m. In addition to Florence Bern’s paint ings, which are on display now through Dec. 4, the center fea tures a permanent photographic exhibit depicting the Holocaust, and focuses on Atlanta’s com munity of survivors through We can help!
