Jewish Committee has presented
its Mass Media Award to Bob
Lange, producer of the“Seeds of
Hate” documentary in the ABC
“20/ 20” TV series, for his expose
of radical right extremist groups
stirring up anti-Semitism among
debt-ridden Midwest farmers.
The award is given annually to
“an individual or institution in
recognition ofdistinguished lead
ership in promoting man’s under-
standing of his fellow man
through mass media for a dis
tinguished record of journalistic
excellence and commitment to
freedom of the press.”
It was presented to Lange by
Atlantan Edward E. Elson, chair
man of AJC’s board of trustees,
who lauded him for “tearing the
veil from the hate-mongers who
cynically spread the plague of
anti-Semitism and deadly violence
among our nation's beleaguered
farmers.”
Elson stated that by revealing
the “hateful simplicity of the rad
ical right, Lange had alerted the
public to a rapidly expanding
danger.
Expanding on his remarks fol
lowing the presentation, Elson
said that “the economic crisis in
rural America has grown more
severe over the past several years.
In an attempt to capitalize on
fears and insecurities growing
out of this crisis, radical right
extremist groups, many of them
espousing virulent anti-Semitism.
have intensified their proselytizing
ing activities among the farmers
of the Middle West."
These groups, he said, “offer
simplistic and extremist solutions
to complex economic problems,
and question the efficacy of demo
cratic processes for the airing of
grievances. In so doing, they pose
a distinct threat to traditional
American values."
It must be stressed, Elson con
tinued “that the vast majority of
farmers are law-abiding citizens
who reject anti-Semitism and
extremism. They and their com
munity leaders can carry the
message to all sectors of society
that scapegoating, stereotyping
and religious bigotry are unac
ceptable responses in America.”
He added: “The farmers of the
region must be assured that other
Americans are responsive to their
plight and support the quest for
an equitable and just national
agricultural policy. Too often the
farming community suffers in
isolation and thus becomes vul
nerable to the outrageous ‘solu
tions’ offered by proponents of
extremist ideologies.”
Israel issues new stamps
by Israel I. Bick
President. Israel Stamp Collectors Societs
Two new issues have been
produced by the State of Israel.
One marks the centenary of the
legendary David Ben-Gurion and
the other, titled “Netanya 86,” is
in the form of a national stamp
exhibition souvenir sheet.
Ben-Gurion, of course, was
one of the guiding lights in pre
independent Israel, a dedicated
leader in the struggle for state
hood and, ultimately, prime min
ister and national commander-
in-chief. He served in these latter
capacities during the crucial years
of the War of Independence and
the subsequent period of crisis.
A native of Poland, he emi
grated to Eretz Israel at age 20
and, 10 years later, was banished
from the land by the Turks. He
then mobilized a battalion of
Jewish fighters, trained in the
U nited States, to fight with Allies
in the conquest of Palestine.
This supreme patriot died at
age 87, and rests in Sde Boker, in
the Negev, beside his wife Paula.
The “Netanya 86” souvenir
sheet reproduces a 16th century
map of the Holy Land. During
“Netanya 86,” the emphasis will
be on young stamp collectors,
some of whom will be showing
the collections for the first time.
Both of these issues are availa
ble from the Israel Stamp Collec
tors Society, along with every
other postage stamp issued in the
country since independence.
