TV airing of Vanunu diary
spurs privacy rights feud
by Gil Sedan
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
broadcast of excerpts from a
diary kept by Mordechai Vanunu
has touched off an angry con
troversy between civil libertar
ians and Israel Television over
the right to privacy.
Vanunu is the former nuclear
technician who is in custody for
giving a British newspaper in
formation about Israel’s alleged
—
nuclear weapons capability. His
lawyer, Amnon Zichroni, said
last Sunday that he might press
charges against the Israel Broad
cast Authority.
A television reporter said he
found the diary in a suitcase in a
building were Vanunu once lived.
It covers the years from 1982-85
and reveals the writer’s attitudes
toward women, family, philosophy,
religion and finances.

Gremlins strike again
The gremlins that take special delight in invading news
paper offices struck again last week and rearranged the lines of
several paragraphs in the L’Chaim feature on "Play-Day at the
Jewish Home." We apologize.
The confusing paragraphs midway through the story should
have read:
1 saw a gentleman who was
confined to a wheelchair. He
held in his arms 6-month-old
Hallie Rosenberg. She looked
up into his eyes and smiled
and cooed with such affec
tion. In return this gentleman
lit up with a smile that had no
bounds. These two were des
tined to be a team. Hallie’s
mom, Laurie, commented,
“They told me he has not
smiled in months, until now,
that is. That’s why I come to
Play-Day.”
Even when L’Chaim’s dedi
cated volunteer photographer
Harold Alan, came to photo
graph “Play-Day,” he was so
touched he plans to come back
and bring his 15-month-old
son Michael.
Margo Edlin told me that
Play-Day has been so satisfy
ing and wonderful for their
daughter, 19-month-old Adri
enne. In fact, it seemed all the
mothers agreed it was both
special and a rare opportunity.
Likewise, the volunteer corps
and the staff are delighted
with the program and not one
person can walk by without
joining in, even if it’s just for a
pinch, a squeeze, a hug or a
kiss. ...

cause. They depicted a troubled
man who had difficulty commu
nicating with others, who had a
“strong urge to prove himself
and who feared he was being
“followed.”
The Civil Rights Association
criticized the publicizing of the
diary as a “gross invasion of pri
vacy.” According to the associa
tion, “A man’s diary is one of his
most intimate writings and can
not be publicized without his
consent.” The Broadcast Author
ity was accused of violating a
1981 law for protection of privacy.
But the Authority maintained
that Vanunu stands accused of
serious offenses against the state
and has lost his right to privacy.
Uri Porat, director general of the
Broadcast Authority, said pains
were taken not to publicize any
thing about Vanunu that is not
already known and to resist “the
temptation to score a great many
journalistic scoops which were
contained in the diary.”
The reporter who obtained it
claimed a relative of Vanunu
authorized its publication.
Zichroni, meanwhile, is on his
way to London to prepare for the
case. Vanunu was last seen in
London on Sept. 30. The govern
ment acknowledged only last
week that he was “under lawful
detention” in Israel and denied
he had been kidnapped by Israeli
agents. When and how he was
brought to Israel remains unex
plained.
