tries. 1 served in the Israeli army,
and so did my son. I want peace.’”

In addition to the importance
of the athletic competition, the
trip to Israel was an educational
and emotional experience. The
theme of the Maccabiah games
was “Two weeks to experience
and a lifetime to remember.” For
these three student athletes, this
theme certainly has great mean
ing. Families of the three athletes
flew to Israel to watch their “stars”
represent the United States and
compete against the best of the
Jewish athletes in the world.
Members of the swimming team
all stayed together instead of
staying with their respective
country teams, thus forging
friendships with their fellow Jew
ish swimmers from throughout
the world. As champions, the
three Ciemson students appeared
on Israeli television and became
instantly recognizable to the
Israeli public.
For Sheryl, Rick and Rudy,
the Maccabiah experience was a
milestone in each of their lives.
Although they are kept quite
busy with academic studies and
daily sw imming practice, all three
students are active members of
the B’nai B’rith Hillel student
organization at Ciemson, and
they have excitedly related their
experiences to their fellow stu
dents.
W. German teens
have limited ideas
about Israel, Jews
BONN (JTA) —A survey of
10,000 West German teenagers
showed strong prejudice,against
Jews and Israel, stemming ap
parently from ignorance.
According to Professor Rainer
Roth of Frankfurt University who
conducted the research, their
level of knowledge about Jews
and Israel is “horrible.”
The survey was taken among
students 13-16 in the areas ot
Stuttgart and Esslingen. It found
that 7.4 percent believe reports
that 5-6 million Jews died in the
Holocaust are “highly exagger
ated.”
Another 14.9 percent think it
is not fair to remind Germans ol
Auschwitz because of the many
outstanding scientific achieve
ments of the German people. 1 he
statement that “Since other people
were involved in mass annihila
tion. it is high time for us to stop
talking about the killing ol the
Jews" was endorsed by 32.9 per
cent of the respondents.
Roth termed some ol tlu
re ponses “dangerous.”
