Another Hurdle Overcome
The creation of the Center branch at the Shirley
Blumenthal Park in Cobb came another step closer
this week as the Cobb Planning Commission voted
unanimously to grant the AJCC a special use permit
for its site on Post Oak Tritt Road. The Center now
hopes to close on the property before the end of the
year.
A great deal of effort went into moving us over this
latest hurdle. Much of the credit goes to the leadership
in Cobb, who met with the commissioners, talked to
our new neighbors and the leaders of civic organiza
tions in the area. From the beginning we sensed not only
an acceptance, but a growing enthusiasm for support
ing this beautiful park and Center in their county. Our
hearing was at the end of a long day of zoning battles,
and the commissioners were visibly relieved to hear a
plan that had so much support from so many people.
Most impressive were the comments of Dotti
Bonds, chairperson of the East Cobb Civic Associa
tion, representing the various neighborhood organiza
tions. who announced that their association unanim
ously supported the Park. Dr. Craig Aronoff, professor
at Kennesaw College and active civic leader, added
that the 5,000 Jewish families in Cobb needed their
own Center. The commissioners' response was enthusi
astic.
Our hats are off to Michael Brown, Stan Sunshine
and all the other Cobb leaders for the many hours they
put into this project. Special kudos to George Stern,
chairman of our Long Range Facilities Planning
Committee, who took many hours away from his law
practice to provide guidance to this effort. This is just
the beginning of the hard work, however, for the
designing, fundraising, construction and program
planning phases are still ahead.
