THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE November 28, 1986 Page 25 Continued from page 3 roni. “It would be a crime to do so.” Even now, although Zichroni is in contact with numerous re porters, he spends almost all of his time answering “I cannot com ment.” The few details as he has released, such as that he has seen Vanunu on numerous occasions, has complete access to him, and that his spirits are good, are gen erally classified facts as well. But in this case, “The au thorities tell me what is permissi ble to say and what is not, I release what 1 can,” explains Zichroni. “Every day 1 am in touch with them, and every day I can release a little more.” But, qualifies a Zichroni aide, “Amnon must be very careful to walk a fine line between judg ment, knowledge of the law and instructions from the authorities. If he makes a mistake—it could mean 15 years of prison.” No wonder that a journalist recently asked the nervous Zichroni whether he “enjoyed Port wine,” only to hear Zichroni react with a reflex reply, I m sorry, but I cannot comment.” While Zichroni’s restraints seem severe, they have their analogy in North American legal procedures. Gag orders in criminal cases are hardly unprecedented. And while defense attorneys are generally talkative, legal canons technically forbid them from making any material statement about a client or case. In some instances, it is unethical for an attorney to even confirm or deny that he is repres enting a given client. Confoundingany debate about secrecy surrounding Vanunu’s crimes is the Israeli government’s refusal to reveal what prison he is being held in. Some weeks ago, back when government officials denied they knew of Vanunu’s whereabouts. Prison Service spokesmen declared that Vanunu —Chiefs— was not being held in any “Prison Service” facility. But this was a mere technicality. Credible media speculation asserted that Vanunu at the time was incarcerated at Gdera, a national security deten tion facility, and also that the facility is operated by Israeli security services, not the Prison Service. T his reporter has learned exclusively that when Zichroni first met his client, Vanunu was still dressed in the jeans and shirt he had worn on the boat during transit — that is il reports of an arrest by sea are indeed correct. All his luggage accompanied the prisoner, although he was not given access to his other clothes until just recently. But Vanunu has since been moved and his prison locale is one of the most sought-after bits of information in Israel today. Zichroni has conducted seven sessions with his client, for peri ods of up to five hours at a time. To reach the prison and yet avoid being followed by a gaggle of reporters, Zichroni has been com pelled to switch cars and make secret getaways. “If necessary," says a Vanunu defense source, “he can count on the government to help his sneak away.” Zichroni refused to confirm that on occa sion he has donned a disguise but acknowledges,“1 have my methods.” However, credible media re- BATHROOMS SHOULDN'T BE BORING AV:’AyV_ 3 I'lVF II II) I I II rnmmr Complete bathroom / renovations I Plumbing repairs / & installation / Shower pans / replaced uitV MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE -the-mastep-baih- (404)971-8162 MARK BRESSLER IVNN BRESSLER MASK I? Of 550 prisoners at Ashkelon, 525 are Arab security prisoners, only 25 being Jewish. Although Ashkelon prisoners wear orange and brown fatigues, Vanunu is being kept in civilian clothes, in a special isolation cell, with no vis itors except interrogators and Zichroni, and with no distrac tions except radio and English language books brought by his attorney. One explanation for the secret move was that Vanunu—now considered the Benedict Arnold of Israel—might be killed by Jew ish prisoners. Vanunu’s father. who has disowned him, has al ready been attacked in the Beer- sheba marketplace where until recently he sold religious items. The family is now in hiding. Moreover, several dozen Negev families with the common Se phardic name “Vanunu” have already petitioned to have a name change because the surname has become so notorious and shame ful in this country. Zichroni denies his client’s life is in danger from other inmates, adding, “But 1 can see no reason for not releasing his prison. 1 can’t answer why, you must speak to the authorities about it.” f Jewish studies program begun^ SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — A Jewish studies program was founded this autumn at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., according to the Northern California Jewish Bulletin. A centerpiece of the program is the 20,000-volume Judaica library purchased from Professor Salo Baron of Columbia University. Professional & Personal Home Health Care /p ^7® • RN'S. LP.X'S.
