Women’s Plea
targets Georgia’s
female politicians

State Rep. Cathey W. Stein
berg, House District #46, is the
honorary chairwoman for the
Women’s Plea for Soviet Jewry
which will take place at I 1 a.m.
Thursday, Dec. 4, at the State
Capitol. Co-chairmen of the event
are Barbara Planer and Erna
Martino. The event, sponsored
by 47 Jewish and non-Jewish
women’s organizations in the
Atlanta metropolitan area, has
been held annually for more than
10 years.
Each year the event is planned
and hosted by a different organi
zation. This year’s Women’s Plea
is being convened by the Atlanta
Jewish Federation’s Women’s
Council.
Women legislators of the Gen
eral Assembly will be honored at
the Women’s Plea, and each will
light a candle on behalf of Soviet
Prisoners of Conscience. The pro
gram will also feature Bella
Khomak, a former refusnik now
living in Israel and working for
the release of her parents still in
the Soviet Union.
The Women’s Plea for Soviet
Jewry is designed to call atten
tion to the plight of the 2.5 mil
lion Jews of the Soviet Union.
Each year, the plea highlights
female political figures to em
phasize that it is through the pol
itical process that this important
human rights issue can be most
effectively addressed.

will leave the Federation build

Monday, Dec. 15.
The program will feature Dr.
Elaine L. Levin, psychologist in
private practice and associate
professor at Georgia State Uni
versity.
The dinner is part of a continu
ing series of networking events
designed to bring together and
inform professional Jewish wom
en. Linda Davidson, Shelley
Gaynes and Wendy Ludwig are
co-chairmen for the networking
dinners.
