I he event is sponsored by the congregation's Soviet Jewry Committee, w hich is co-chaired by Susan Berman and Sandra Craine. T he Herders are members of Etz Chaim. “We wanted to honor them in some way for their achievement.” said Mrs. Berman. “because we know it hasn’t been easy for them to leave their fam ily and adjust to life in a com pletely different society." The congregation's Soviet Jewry Committee has sponsored a number of events calling atten tion to the condition of Jews in the Soviet Union, including a breakfast of watered-dow n grits and hard dark bread to symbol ize the food that prisoners of con science receive. Mrs. Craine said. “The children could really iden tify with the experience and feel for the prisoners and the unjust treatment they must endure.” I wo years ago, the congrega tion adopted Lev and Inna Elbert as its refusnik family and have been communicating with them by letter and by phone. Since news reached them of the death of l ev Elbert's father, Haim, the synagogue has made plans to put up a yart/eit plaque in his memory and collect funds to plant trees in Israel in his name. “In this way. at least his spirit w ill have made it to Israel,” Mrs. Craine said.
