THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE December 5, 1986 Page 23 NO JW helps train the learning disabled Between 50 and 80 percent of disabled adults are jobless, con fining them to a life ol poverty and dependence. Continuing a 91-year-old tradition of commu nity service through advocacy and education, the National Council of Jewish Women has chosen to attack this problem locally by making a contribution to Urban Living Options Inc. “Reform of child labor laws was among the first issues ad dressed by the National Coun cil,” said Nancy Levine, presi dent of NCJ W’s Atlanta Section. Though that battle is long since won, the organization continues to represent the interests of chil dren and youth. Mrs. Levine explained that NC.IW chooses to support agen cies that provide service, advo cacy and education. “We think Urban LivingOptions Inc. (ULO) does an excellent job with all three tasks. Our contributions will further ULO’s cause.” ULO trains men and women with learning problems to fully participate in the community, and to lead fulfilling and produc tive lives. Saralyn Oberdorfer, president of ULO’s board of di rectors, says ULO was created because “many young people who have learning problems ex perience a life of dependence on others. While they desire to be on their own, it takes training and spe cialized services to learn to work, to keep house and to make friends. These are things that all of us need to have a good life. Public sector programs are experienc ing cutbacks and simply cannot be everything to everyone. Urban 1 iving Options offers another path for people in need.” The U TO job training program matches the participant with the type of employment he or she desires. After placing the partici pant with an employer, a job coach goes with the participant to the job site. There the coach is involved in the training process, learning the job as the new em ployee does. One recent placement in thejob training program is a 26-year-old young man named Bill. He is working as a courtesy clerk at Kroger’s. The job coach went through the Kroger instruction session with Bill as he learned the correct job behavior, how to weigh produce, how to clock in, and other requirements of his position. ULO director of administra tive services Pat Puckett says, “in the two or three months that EXPERIENCE CAMP ESTMONT Sleep-away camping at its bestl For boys and girls ages 6 to 16. The goal of ULO is that their participants live independently. Economic independence is the first step; learning to maintain a household, the second; third, and equally important, is building a network of friends to support their new lifestyle.
