THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE December 5, 1986 Page 5 Another side of Israel Thanks from ORT Editor: I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Atlanta community. The Soul hern Israelite and mem bers of the Atlanta Region of Women's American ORT. for their support and participation during the recent 16th National Board Conference. We shared our pride in our outstanding accomplishments in the membership and fundraising arena. And experienced many important benefits: The sense of involvement and excitement gen erated amongst our membership; and the pride that came to the Atlanta Region by being the host- Editor: 1 read with interest Mr. Lefco’s and Rabbi Lewis’s letters sug gesting that important differen ces exist between the earlier Nazi Holocaust and the current abor tion Holocaust. 1 count foursuch differences: • The earlier Holocaust was largely confined to Europe and probably took less than 12 mil lion victims in all. The current one is worldwide and claims many millions more. • There are many survivors from the earlier Holocaust, but have you met anyone who has survived the abortionist’s “tools”? • As Mr. Eefco pointed out, victims of the earlier Holocaust suffered longer because they were less helpless and because Hitler's “physicians” were less efficient and quick than the “licensed physicians” Rabbi l.ewis praises ess area. It is through your support that we can educate children and adults throughout Israel and the Diaspora... It is through your support that we can maintain a student enrollment of 134.000 per year... And it is through your support that we can train stu dents for the year 2000. With many thanks for a job well done, and for extending Southern Hospitality to over 500 appreciative national board dele gates from all over the United States. Delay Harher loeal arrangements ehairman today. • Most important, the earlier Holocaust was done by someone else, following an interpretation of their traditions that defined Jews as non-human. Today the perpetrators are ourselves. Each of us participates passively or actively. Some of us even come up with strange interpretations of Jewish tradition that suddenly make our victims “not human life.” No wonder we are fright ened and angered by the medical and scientific facts about human gestation, presented to us by those whom Rabbi Lewis calls “cru saders.” Both Holocausts tell us much more about us human be ings- both the good “us" and the bad “them”—than we’d like to know. David Ben-Hannah by Carl Alport HAIFA T he fascinating face of Israel at home, beyond the politics and the headlines the human side of Israel, as reflected in the little tales of every-day life: Employment opportunities. An office has been opened in Jerusa lem for registration of Cohens and Levis. Considering that the Messiah is expected soon and the temple will be rebuilt, there will be need for trained personnel to perform the traditional functions of the temple, and bona fide Cohens and Levis are called upon to sign up. Vo claimants. The periodic sale of unclaimed lost articles, held by the Eel Aviv police department recently put up for auction, among other items, a pair of wooden human legs, a homeless donkey and a student identification card dated 1937. A nosey tour. Thanks were expressed in the public press to the Egged bus company which conducted a “sightseeing" tour for blind people— to the fragrant Rothschild gardens in Zichron Yaakov when the blossoms were at their aromatic best. True resting plaee. Kibbutz Ciaash. near Herzlia, accepts for burial in its cemetery deceased persons who may have made some contribution to the Zionist cause, but are not accepted as bona tide Jews by the rabbinate, and hence are not eligible for bui ial in the regular cemeteries. Provi sion is also made for burial ol Jews who want to lie alongside their non-Jewish spouses. H ants her money haek. A 31- year-old single girl from Eel Avi\ saved up to go on a week-long singles cruise, only to find that the passengers comprised fami lies w ith lots of children, 40 sin gle girls and one available male. Jerusalem D C. Christian friends of Israel are urging that the cen trality of Jerusalem in Jew ish life and history should he constantly emphasized by referring to the city as David’s Capital, or in short. Jerusalem. D.C. The prime minister's mail. Vic tor Shabbat advertises in the press (with his picture) that he has an invention which can save the lives of millions who are afflicted with asthma, bronchitis and shortness of breath. “1 shall reveal the secret only to the Israel prime minister, and hereby request a reply and a private meeting with him.” The secret is not for sale, he adds. Demographic solution. For those who worry about popula tion growth, the Central Bureau of Statistics reports that Jewish women settled in the West Bank have a birth rate oi 42 per thou sand, as compared to 36 per thousand for Moslem women there. A useful strike. About a dozen officials in the Ministry of Com merce and Industry went on strike lor some reason or other. During their absence it was observed that the functions they had per formed were unnecessary, and the posts were dispensed with. Sounds familiar. The clash be tween religious zealots and sec ularists took an ugly turn during a physical brawl, and 15 from both sides were arrested for riot ing. The confrontation took place in the Moslem town of Kafr Kas- sem, and all the participants were townspeople. New role for Israel. The visit ing foreign minister of Belize (the former British Honduras) ex pressed his thanks to Israel for efforts made by Jerusalem to bring about a peaceful under standing between his country and neighboring Guatemala. A life term. Yihia Ben Avra- ham has been in an Israel prison for 26 years because he refuses to grant a divorce to his wife, as ordered by the rabbinate. Yihia claims he still loves his wife, and will never sign the divorce papers. The Mormon menace. Jerusa lem Mayor Teddy Kolleck claims that during the 17 years that the Mormons have been operating in his city, three Arabs and one Jew converted to the Mormon faith, as against 21 Mormons who be came Jews. Awaiting later statistics. In the A Jewish ’pedigree’ f Greece, Israel in joint venture ATHENS (JTA) —Greece and Israel have put the finishing touches to a joint advertising and promotional campaign aimed at attracting North American tourists to both countries. Details of the campaign and its timing were agreed to last week during the visit to Israel by the Greek Deputy Minister of Economy Panayiotis Roumeliotis. The Economic Ministry announced that the campaign will be conducted in the United States and Canada with the objec tive of promoting package tours to Greece and Israel using the air carriers of each country. Roumeliotis was in Israel to recip rocate the visit to Greece last May by the Israeli minister of tourism, Avraham Sharir. who is also minister of justice. The world's oldest profession. Lexicographer Reuven Sivan seeks to correct a popular mis apprehension He notes that ac cording to the Book of Genesis, Adam “gave names to all cattle and to the fowl of the air and to every beast of the field.” Hence, the world’s oldest profession is linguistics. More on Holocaust/abortion Editor: Last week. Herbert F. “Billy" Rose offered: If “the child says he or she is Jewish, that should be enough. The child should not be embarrassed” etc. In doing so, I assume Mr. Rose believes that this will save our Jewish children into the next generation. Jews are Jews via a formula, tradition and legal system. Would this “universal man," who accepts a person as Jewish simply by his proclamation also accept a Collie as purebred with out a pedigree? Jews also have a “pedigree,” a legal formula over 3,500 years old. Anyone can be a Jew. They either are born of a Jewish woman or. if not, converted according to our established laws. Many Jews believe it is most important to marry another Jew and we pray our own children will marry Jews. Mr. Rose is proposing a new religion.
