A.A. planning to celebrate
completion of Sefer Torah
Ahavath Achim Congregation
will celebrate a Siyum, the com
pletion of a new Sefer Torah
(Scroll of the Law) on Sunday,
Dec. 7. Once the last letter is
inked in, the Torah Scroll be
comes Judaism's most holy object.
I his will be done in a ceremony
by Marian and Phil Perling who
have commissioned the “Centen
nial Torah.”
Festivities will begin at 10:30
a.m. in the synagogue’s parking
lot with the “March of the Tor
ahs" down Peachtree Battle
Avenue. “The purpose of march
ing in public with several scrolls
of the Torah,” said Rabbi Arnold
Goodman, “is to sum up an an
cient rabbinic teaching that the
Torah was given at Sinai, rather
than the Land of Israel, in order
to affirm the universality of its
message. As is the custom, the
new Torah will be carried under
a wedding canopy, symbolizing
that the community of Israel was
wed to G-d through this revela
tion of the Bible.”
Within the sanctuary, the last
letters will be inked in to com
plete the Torah.
Sidney Kaplan, Ahavath
Achim’s president, noted, "This
Centennial Torah is a significant
component of the congregation’s
year-long centennial celebration.
Every Shabbat that we read from
it and study from it, we w ill again
be inspired by the teachings of
our glorious tradition.”
The Perling family has been
active in the synagogue for many
decades. Several years ago, the
family dedicated the Perling
Youth Lounge of the synagogue.
They have also been supportive
of many of the congregation’s
educational activities.
