of consumer rights and a Fellow
of Brandeis University, was the
speaker at the university's Found
er's Day convocation held recent

She is sharing her Bat Mitzva
with Rachel Genusov of the Soviet
Union.
Dr. Leo Pine of Atlanta has
been chosen to receive the Rhoda
Benham Award for 1987 by the
Medical Mycological Society of
the Americas. The award w ill be
presented Feb. 28. in Atlanta.
The award is given by the
society in recognition of a pro
fessional devoted to advances in
medical mycology. Noted par
ticularly was Pine's development
ol a synthetic media which made
it possible to cultivate Hisio-
plasma capsutalum in either yeast
phase or mycelial phase. Histo-
plasma capsulatum causes a
serious tuberculosis-like disease.
Pine, who received his Ph.D.
at the University of California,
Berkeley, is a fellow of the Amer
ican Academy of Microbiology
and a fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement
ol Science. He is recognized for
having developed a chemically
defined medium for the growth
and study ol Legionella pneu
mophila, the causal organism lor
I egionnaires' Disease.
He has done mycological
research at the National Insti
tutes of Health, Bethesda; Duke
University Medical School; Ser
vice Mycologie I list it ut Pasteur,
Pat is. and he has been with the Cen
ters lor Disease Control since
1963

to be chairman of the Executive
Forum of the United Way.

David M. Zacks of Atlanta
was recently named 1987 vice
chairman of the board for the
Cieorgia Division of the Ameri
can Cancer Society. He is also
serving as chairman of Income
Development for Georgia.

Zacks, a regional law firm with
offices in Atlanta and Augusta.

Jewish Community Center ol

Helen Spiegel was honored last
month in DeKalb County as one
ol the “Ten Outstanding Women
Who Make Things Happen For
The Better.” Mrs. Spiegel is co-
lounder and co-chair, along with
Sara Duke, of the Shearith Israel
Night Shelter.
The shelter is staffed by volun
teers of the Jewish community,
as well as a number of Christian
groups. Mrs. Spiegel's nomina
tion for the aw ai d w as made by a
volunteer from St. Matthew's
1 utheran Church, which has
played an active role in the
shelter. •
