Israel reports 33 AIDS cases
JERUSALEM (JTA) The
Health Ministry has set up seven
blood testing centers around the
country to check for AIDS
Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome which can be trans
mitted through blood transfu
sions. To date, 33 cases of AIDS
have been diagnosed in Israel, of
which 1 7 were fatal according to
Ministry figures.
Dr. Moshe Mashiach of the
Health Ministry said 20 of the
diagnosed patients were homo
sexuals, 10 were hemophiliacs,
one an intravenous drug user,
and two others were infected by
transfusions of contaminated
blood. Blood donated for trans
fusions has been screened for
AIDS since the beginning of the
year.
So far, 10 samples were found
to have the AIDS antibodies and
the donors have been located and
asked to undergo further tests.
Mashiach pointed out that the
presence of the antibody does
not necessarily mean the carrier
has the disease. But the checking
process has spared at least 30
translusion recipients from ex
posure to it.
Apart from homosexuals, few
persons have availed themselves
of the free blood testing service.
The government’s Special AIDS
Policy Committee, which initiated
the program, has recommended
that the testing centers accept
anyone producing an identifica
tion card without need for refer
ral by a doctor.
Meanwhile, the Weizmann In
stitute of Science in Rehovot
reported over the weekend that
its scientists have developed a
substance which may be useful in
fighting AIDS. The deliberately
cautious statement said the new
drug is being tested at Kaplan
Hospital in Rehovot.
Ref usnik cancer patient awaiting
promised exit visa for 3 weeks
by Susan Birnbaum
NEW YORK (JTA) Refusnik
cancer patient Rimma Bravve is
still “nervously and anxiously”
awaiting the exit visa promised
her more than three weeks ago,
says her sister, Larisa Shapiro of
Rochester, N.Y.
Viktor Kashlev, the Soviet
ambassador to the Helsinki Ac
cords follow-up talks in Vienna,
announced almost three weeks
ago to the talks that Bravve, 32,
and her husband Vladimir of
Moscow had been granted visas.
Rimma is terminally ill with
ovarian cancer. Since Kashlev
made that statement in a public’
speech before 3b delegates to the
Vienna talks, the Bravves have
not been given their visas.
Shapiro told the Jewish Tele
graphic Agency that Vladimir
has repeatedly lodged complaints
at the OVIR emigration office
and the Communist Party head
quarters in Moscow. Vladimir
most recently returned to the
OVIR last Thursday, Dec. 4,
Shapiro said Sunday. At that
time, officials spoke to him
“much more softly than before,"
Shapiro said. Previously, she said,
he had been told “Don’t come
here and don’t bother us. We
have no news for you. Just sit
and wait.”
Shapiro said the change in
attitude at the OVIR might indi
cate that emigration officials had
probably heard about a decision.
“Still,” she said, “they did not
tell him anything.”
Shapiro said that an oncolo
gist at the University of Roches
ter Medical Center, Dr. Jackson
Beecham, sent a letter on Dec. 3
to Kashlev in which the cancer

specialist told Kashlev of the
extreme importance of Bravve’s
release and arrival in the United
States as soon as possible.
Beecham advised Kashlev that
Bravve not receive any more
treatment in the Soviet Union
because it would jeopardize the
possibility of a bone-marrow
transplant, which would be given
at the Rochester hospital. Bravve
has been receiving chemotherapy
treatments at a Moscow hospital.
Bravve met in October with
Dr. Robert Gale when he was in
Moscow to see the patients on
whom he had performed bone-
marrow transplants following the
Chernobyl nuelear disaster. At
that time. Gale said he felt that
her condition required such a
bone-marrow transplant to save
her life.
Shamir softens opposition
to international conference
by David Kantor
BONN (JTA)—Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir quali
fied his long-standing opposition
to an international conference
for Middle East peace in a wide-
ranging interview published in
the West German daily. Die Welt.
He also repeated Israel’s
strong denial that it was in any
way involved with or knowledge
able of the transfer of funds paid
by Iran f or American weapons to
the contra rebels seeking to
overthrow the Sandinista govern
ment of Nicaragua.
With respect to an interna
tional conference to resolve the
Arab-Israeli conflict, Shamir
told Die Welt, “I do not think
that such a conference would
contribute anything to peace in
our region.” He added, however,
“Under certain circumstances 1
do not oppose such a conference.”
He explained that if it took
place “after we had reached an
understanding with one neigh
bor or another, then, an interna
tional conference could maybe
be helpf ul in confirming the areas
of understanding or providing
guarantees."
Shamir denied reports that
Israel and the Soviet Union were
engaged in direct contacts aimed
at improving their relations.
