Soviet Union, Israel conferring
TEL AVIV (JTA) The
Soviet Union appears to be
making overtures toward Is
rael in the course of quiet con
tacts at senior diplomatic lev
els which have been going on
for some time, according to
an article in Haaretz.
At meetings in recent weeks,
the Soviets seemed interested
in a trade-off whereby they
would renew discussions on
the establishment of consular
relations with Israel and on
the problem of Jewish emi
gration in exchange for Israel's
agreement to Soviet partici
pation in the Middle East po
litical process, including an
international conference for
Arab-lsraeli peace, Haaretz
said.
The contacts began early in
October after Prime Minister
Shimon Peres met with Sov iet
Foreign Minister Eduard
Shevardnadze in New York.
The U.S.S.R. reportedly is
reassessing its Middle East
policy, and. according to re
ports from Israeli ambassa
dors in several European cap
itals. Soviet diplomats have
expressed regret over break
ing relations with Israel in
1967.
They have also indicated it
was a mistake for Moscow to
rely solely on Syria with
respect to its interest in Mid
dle East developments. Ac
cording to Haaretz, the
U.S.S.R. is aware of Israel's
concerns.
In all their discussions,
Sov iet officials have called at
tention to television programs
and theatrical presentations
in the Soviet Union devoted
to Jewish themes as a sign of
their willingness to re-examine
Sov iet attitudes toward Israel.
Haaretz reported.

campaign.
He also has resigned from the

the Republican Party. He with
drew his $750,000 pledge to the

Both the university and local
UJ A-Federation officials say the
loss of his pledges will not deter
their fund-raising efforts. A
UJ A-Federation leader said he
doubted the agency would have
to return any contributions, since
it’s unclear what portion of the
contribution, if any, was obtained
by Boesky illegally.
However, an unnamed LJA-
Federalion source told the Fong
Island Jewish World that he was
worried people would wonder
how the agency could appoint "a
crook" as campaign chairman.
