has a new’ photographic exhibit
on display in its gallery. “Con
cerning a Personal Project: Pho
tographs of Nazi Concentration
Camps” is a photographic essay
on the Nazi Concentration Camp
sites in Austria, Belgium, Cze-
choslavakia, France, West Ger
many and Poland by Ohio-based
photographer James Friedman.
Friedman’s photographs show'
startling slices of normality in
camps whose physical existence
is a grim reminder of man’s
inhumanity. There is a tension
between the beauty of the images
and the horror of the subject
matter. A young boy posing be
fore the wall in Terezin where
Nazis lined up Jews to be shot;
the Museum, Cafeteria, and Hotel
at Auschwitz; diners at an out
door restaurant in Breendonck
all of these stand as truthful
accounts of the present and ironic
commentaries on society’s capac
ity to remember, to memorialize
and perhaps, at times, to forget.
Friedman's photographs will
be on display at the ZACHOR
Holocaust Center, lower level of
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center, 1745 Peachtree Road,
N.E. Hours are: Mon.-Thurs. 10
a.m.-2 p.m.; Sun. 1-4 p.m. There
