Poor communication often marks the relationship between single parent and child, accord ing to experts, who say a child’s development is often hindered by the absence of an adult male or female role model in their life. Jewish Family Services (JFS) has just completed a year-long pilot project, called the PAL Project, that takes children age six to 16, who are from single parent households, and matches them with a substitute Jew ish big sister or big brother. Often, according to one 16-year-old in the PAL Pro gram, he and his older pal “just watch television and talk about things.” PAL Program participants got together Dec. 14 at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center for a Hanuka Party, sponsored by the Achim Lodge of B’nai B’rith. “I wanted to increase these kids’ Jewish awareness,” said lodge member Michael Hessing, w ho coordinated and conceived the idea for an Achim Lodge PAl. Hanuka Party. “A lot of young Jews have lost the sense of identity with Jewish culture and religion.” Hessing, 33, got his friend. Scott Rosenthal, to videotape the Hanuka Party.
