Coaches confer over Yeshiva basketball
Special to TSI
After basketball practice at the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter each night, Stuart and Jan
Chafin-Zonder head home to
discuss an upcoming opponent
and to go over mistakes made in
practice or in previous contests.
“We talk about basketball often,”
said Jan, who coaches Yeshiva
High School’s girls’ basketball
squad while Stuart oversees the
development of Yeshiva’s boys’
squad.
Looking back on the first part
of the 1986-87 basketball season
at Yeshiva High School, both are
pleased with their respective
team’s progress. With a 57-54

Dec. 16, the boys improved their
, record to 8-2. Playing in Region
7-A, Stuart’s team went 4-10 last
year.
The girls’ team is still search
ing for its first victory, “but the
girls are improving with each
game,” said Jan. “We knew this
year would be a learning process
for me and the team.” This is her
first year as head coach; Stuart
already has one season under his
belt.
“What Jan is going through
this year,” said Stuart, “is the
same thing 1 went through last
year. It is a period of adjustment.
But once the players become
familiar with a coach’s system,
things get much easier. Heading
into this season, the players who
were with me last year knew what
to expect from me.”
Stuart, a 31-year-old former
basketball and baseball player at
Oak Park High School in Oak
Park, Mich., was hired as Yeshi
va’s basketball coach three weeks
before the 1985-86 season started.
“Strategy is his main strength,”
said Jan, who played basketball
at the high school level for two
years. “We are both strong at
developing individual skills.” Her
interest in basketball was re
kindled during the trials and
tribulations of the ’85-’86 season
as she observed Stuart's coach
ing techniques from the wooden
bleachers.
“1 knew we were young and
would make many mistakes,” said
Jan. “Our team is composed of
four juniors, four eighth-graders
and two freshmen. The attitude
though has been great. The girls
are competitive and quick
learners.”
Returning players are juniors
Rebecca Hoelting; Andrea Low
enstein, co-captain; Lisie
Schmuckler, co-captain; and Sara
Wright, co-captain. New players
are ninth graders Abby Cohn
and Iddit Gal-Ed; eighth graders
are Tsaffie Brenner, Shoshannah
Fineberg, Jessica Goodman and
Blair Rush.
The boys’ team has juniors Avi
Gris and Brad M intz, sophomore
Jason Parker, and freshmen Benji
Gris, Benji Ram and Matt Leader
at the guard position. The for
wards are Richard Cohn, junior;
Jeffrey Tuvlin, sophomore. Inter
changing between forward and
center arc juniors George Birn
baum and David Ichav. The tall
est player is only 6'2".
“The performance of the boys’
team has been a pleasant sur
prise,” said Stuart. “We have
been winning games because of
an aggressive defense, quickness
and our guard pla\. We are also
winning because everyone is giv
ing a 100 percent effort each
game. That is all 1 ask for them to
do.”
Together, Stuart and Jan hope
success on the basketball court
continues when the season gears
up again on Jan. 5 againt New-
nan-Heritage. T hroughout win
ter vacation, there is no doubt
what their frequent topic of con
versation will be.
