can do is to continue to remain
optimistic about that. It’s impor
tant that we keep in place in 1987
American resettlement programs,
so that if the flow of Soviet emi
gration increases, we won’t have
to reinvent the wheel.”
He added that refugee families
might seek resettlement in Atlanta
from such countries as Iran,
South Africa and also from South
America in 1987, but not to any
great degree.
JFS will also join in the chal
lenge of keeping pace with the
growth of Atlanta’s Jewish popu
lation. Schwartz indicated that
the whole range of serious social
problems that occur in the larger
community also occur in the
Jewish community and it is Jew
ish Family Services, he said, that
is called upon in many cases for
community guidance and indi
vidual counseling.
Prominent Jewish businessmen
and professionals in Atlanta will
be increasingly called on in the
coming year to support not only
local programs, but those affect
ing Israel as well.
Israeli Consul General Issachar
Katzir hopes to effect new trade
agreements between American
businesses in Atlanta and the
State of Israel. He noted that last
year's level of trade between the
two countries reached $4.5 bil
lion. “That’s a lot of money,” he
said, “for such a small country.”
Katzir said his office is work
ing on a “trade mission” to get
Atlanta area businesses to invest
in Israel.
“We want to reach what we
call our ‘second independence,”
economically,” he said. “Politi
cally, we’ve got independence.
Militarily, we will defeat our
enemy. But we want our Jewish
brothers and sisters, who are
well-to-do to invest in Israel and
to make a good profit.”
As to his projection for in
creased trade agreements between
Atlanta and Israel, Katzir said
“the sky is the limit.”
“The Chinese used to say that
the longest journey starts with
the first step,” he said. “We will
do our first step in 1987 and see
how it goes.”
The Southeastern branch of
the Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith (ADI.), which is
headquartered in Atlanta, also
seeks to make new strides in the
coming year.
According to its chairman. Dr.
James Kaufmann of Atlanta,
ADI. plans to beef up services to
Georgia and her neighboring
states by increasing lines of
communications with political
figures, Jewish leaders, police
officials, newspaper editors and
others throughout the South.
“We generally visit them and
exchange views as we try to pre
serve everyone’s rights, Christians
and Jews, whites and blacks, ev
erybody alike,” he said.
Likewise, efforts will continue
to be made by the Atlanta
chapter of the American Jewish
Committee (AJC) in the area of
black Jewish relations.
According to Dr. Marvin
Weintraub, AJC president,
black Jewish relations will con
tinue to improve in 1987.
“We will keep the avenue of
communications open and tree
flowing through a series of on
going discussions between the
two communities, not necessar-

ily on a crisis basis," he said, “but
on a continuing basis.”
Fifth District Congressman-
elect John Lewis is the imme
diate past co-chair of Atlanta’s
black/Jewish coalition.
Dr. Weintraub said the the
Jewish community’s predominant
support of candidate John Lewis
in the recent elections will have a
positive effect on black/Jewish
relations both inside and outside
of the Fifth Congressional Dis
trict.
As Jewish leaders look to the
coming year, they appear to be in
agreement on the path that needs
to be taken to support a Jewish
community of 60,000. Continu
ally assessing the needs of the
community will be the task to be
dealt with in 1987, least by
all endeavoring to meet those
needs.
