Rate of yerida in Israel increasing for youth, 18-29 JERUSALEM (JTA)—the Absorption Ministry has released figures indicating that 19 percent of Israelis in the 18-29 age group are likely to emigrate. The ten dency toward yerida dropped to nine percent in the 30-49 age group, but overall the propensity of Israelis to leave the country is alarming. Yossi Kochik, who heads the ministry’s department for the prevention of yerida, said he is initiating a new project to en courage yordim—Israelis living permanently abroad—to return home in time for Israel’s 40th anniversary celebrations in 1988. He said the project would focus on finding them appropriate jobs. A recent survey indicated that 92 percent of the public believes yerida is harmful. About 34 per cent thinks the main reason for it is employment problems; lb per cent said the cause was unsatis factory living standards; 14 per cent blamed the security situa tion; and 11 percent attributed yerida to the waning of the Jew- ish-Zionist identity of Israel. Abdel Nasser, according to a retired Egyptian naval officer who says he commanded the operation. Retired Vice Admiral Samir S ha la hi wrote in the current issue of the Cairo weekly A-Shaab, “We carried out the mission near Egyptian territorial waters west of the town of Al-Dakhila on Jan. 25. 1968." T hat was the date when the Dakar, a British-built submarine of World War II vintage on its delivery voyage to Israel with a crew of 69 was last heard from. It was never determined whether the undersea craft foundered because of the failure of its pres surized hull or other internal dif ficulties, or was destroyed by enemy action. Until now, Egypt has denied any knowledge of the fate of the Dakar. Earlier this year, Egypt gave Israel permission to search in its coastal waters for traces of the submarine. The search, carried out with the help of U.S. Navy personnel and equipment, was terminated in October after nothing was found. Shalabi, in his account of events nearly 19 year ago, wrote: “Our underwater detection sys tem discovered a hostile target. We reported to President Nasser who ordered the Naval Command to locate the target and hit it. Nasser was concerned over a possible attack by Israeli frog men. Seventeen kilometers from shore, we made contact with the submarine. I gave the order and we dropped 36 depth charges on it, and reported on our success.” The admiral said “helicopters that arrived on the scene searched for remains of the sub, hut there were none.” C reative C andid Photography HAMMOND FESTIVAL in SANDY SPRINGS 252-0209 J “A Different Kind of Jewelry Store” SALE Everything reduced 15%-50% off our everyday low prices December 26th-31st 392 9696 Williamsburg at Dunwoody Mt.
