VOL XXXI, No. 1 Atlanta, Georgia September, 1987 Spelman Welcomes Its First Black Woman President By Athena Williams This year is an exciting year for all returning Spel- manites and incoming Spel- manites as we welcome our new President of our wonderful institution. We are now under the new leader ship of a dynamic individual and I’m sure that Dr. Cole will remain an inspiration to us all. A.W.—Many people believe that Spelman College breeds apathy among the student body, and the faculty. How do you intend to address this issue? Dr. J.C.—Alone I will not be able to solve any problems. And I say that not to sound like a cautious adminis trator. On the contrary, I say that with the challenge, both to myself and to the Spelman students. I would like to stim ulate the Spelman student body socially and intellec tually to want to be involved in her own education. I assure you I do not have in my side pocket the answers, nor the magical solution. But what I do have is a willing ness. One to seriously work with student government, two to be accessible to more than leaders on this campus and three to understand that the notion of student involve ment is an issue which faculty and staff and even the larger Atlanta community must also be involved with. So, we have got to figure it out. My approach to almost any problem is to first of all familiarize myself with the issue, so that before I make any suggestions, before I begin to cooperate with (continued on page 3) Dr. Johnetta Cole
