VOLLEYBALL: A Winning Season
' - *
by Angie Fry
The volleyball squad ended its
season on an upbeat note by compiling
a record of 10-4 under first year head
coach Mary Ann Ingram.
The squad won three of its last
four games, losing only to Oglethorpe
at home.
"The loss was very disappointing
because we didn’t play up to our
ability, and we’ve played much better
against them in |he past," commented
Coach Ingram.
The squad then competed at the
Phoenix Cup Tournament in post
season play. They finshed in third
place behind Oglethorpe (first place)
and Flaggers (second place).
"My expectations were met at the
tournament," replied Ingram. "The
Florida team (Flaggers) was the
toughest competition, and the loss to
Oglethorpe was expected." Freshman
Christie Cooley was named All-
Tournament Player, and co-captain
Kelly Debro and freshman Crystal
Roach were both nominated as All-
Tournament players.
With one year of experience to
build upon, Coach Ingram feels they
could use two more outside hitters to
be an even better team. The team lost
their starting outside hitter, co-captain
Wyndy Whiteside, early in the season
due to injury, but was able to fill her
position with Cygi Lee.
"That [not having any outside
hitters] was the difference in the
Oglethorpe game. I’ve heard from two
ladies who are interested in joining the
team, and [they are the outside hitters
we are looking for]."
Looking back on the season, Coach
Ingram said that she would like to
have been able to play Fort Valley
over again.
"We only played them once, and
they didn’t have time to warm up
because they arrived late due to car
trouble. That game wasn’t any
indication of how well they can play."
Co-captain Wyndy Whiteside, out
for the majority of the season with an
injury, had this to say about the team’s
season, "Our season went very well,
and with this same squad, we’ll come
back next year even stronger."
Although the squad’s season has
officially ended, they still will be
organized under co-captain Kelly
Debro, to compete in three USVB
tournaments this coming spring.
Congratulations to the squad and to
Coach Ingram on a terrific year!
BASKETBALL:
Off to a
Slow Start
by Angie Fry
The basketball squad opened its
season hosting Spring Hill from
Mobile, Alabama Friday night at 7:30,
in Read Hall.
The team completed its preseason
play two weeks ago. Coach Richey-
Walton gave her outlook on the team’s
progresss. "We trained hard physically,
but we’re still behind on learning the
game and execution is a big concern
too." Despite these weaknesses, Coach
Walton felt certain about the team’s
progress and so did the players.
Sophomore center, Betrice Donald said,
"We’ve been working very hard this
year in preparation for the season.
We’re a young team, mostly freshmen
and sophomores, but we have a lot of
spirit and dedication."
Coach Walton felt that the squad
could control the game if they executed
their plays properly. "We have the
quickness and speed, but not a lot of
height," replied Walton. Spring Hill,
however, benefitted from the experience
of several returning upperclassmen and
also had actual game experience going
into the game. However, their
preseason opponents were questionable
and Coach Walton believed that their
lade of good competition was a critical
factor in the game.
The main areas the team wanted to
focus on were a well-balanced offense,
and half-court pressure on defense. By
establishing this game plan, everyone
would be involved in the game
offensively, and on defense, the team
would be able to rush Spring Hill and
force them to turnover the ball.
"We want to be and do the best
that we can," emphasized Donald.
"We know with your support and our
hard work, we will start the season off
on a good note."
