INTO WEEK LONG ACITIVITES

What’s a birthday without ice cream
and an entire week of celebration?
For the first time, Founders Day be
comes Founders Week.. Spelman
College welcomes its 114th year of
educating bright, young, gifted, Af
rican American women with an en
tire week of delightful treats and ac
tivities.
This year’s theme, “Human Rights:
The Spelman Experience,” certainly
describes this week of commemora
tion, open dialogue, dynamic ora
tory, and scholarly thought.
Highlights for the week begin with
an open dialogue for all Spelman
students and alumnae in the dorms.
Then, following in the tradition of
other Founders Days, the Founders
Day convocation introduces Speaker
Jane Smith of the Atlanta Project.
Then celebrate both Spelman’s birth
day and Brother Chair Robert Hol
land, Jr., by cooling your pallets with
ice cream, ice cream, and even more
Ben and Jerry’s Homeade Ice Cream
Next, sample the literary discussions
of a beloved former president, Dr.
Albert E. Manley, at a book signing.
Later, recognize the need for cel
ebrating a different culture at the
Israel Cultural Day Event. Finally,
enjoy the Thursday evening convo
cation with a special guest speaker.
In keeping with the Spelman
mission and exceptional experi
ence, which encourages that
Spelman students now, like those
before them, not only reap the
benefits of the classroom, but also
leam from the speakers at convo
cation, services symposia, and
presentations. Invited guests in
clude alumnae, Dr. Jane Smith of
the Atlanta Project, and Human
Rights attorneys Dovey Roundtree
and Annie Brown Kennedy.
Jane E. Smith, Ed.D.,C’68, is
1995’s Founders Day Speaker. Dr.
Smith is Program director for the
Atlanta Project that is dedicated to
wards improvement of the quality of
life in Atlanta. As Program Director,
she is responsible for supervising a
collaboration center, 20 cluster of
fices, and over 40 academic and cor
porate partner organizations. Dr.
Smith acquired a Masters degree in
Sociology from Emory University
and is a member of the Board of
Trustees of Leadership Atlanta and
the Board of Directors of the North
west Georgia Girl Scouts Council,
Inc. She is also a senior administra
tor at Spelman College. She contin
ues to sit on many boards and com
mittees; among them is her member
ship with Spelman College Corpo
rate Women’s Roundtable. Dr.
Smith, a motivational speaker, has
spoken extensively on subjects re
lated to leadership and community
developement and has been featured
in Essence and Life magazines.
Dovey J. Roundtree, C’38,
Founders Spirit Awardee, certainly
has served her community in various
ways. She is a legal consultant to
numerous governmental agencies and
a Special Hearings Officer for Hous
ing and Urban Developement. She
has been guest lecturer at several
institutions of higher education, in
cluding Harvard University’s School
of Law. She has been an Attorney at
Law since 1951 and is now a senior
member of Roundtree, Knox, Hunter,
and Parker Law Firm. Giving of her
talents through other venues, she has
served in the Women’s Army Corps-
First Officer’s Candidate class and
as an Attorney Advisor on The United
States Department of Labor. Ashon-
oree of the National Bar Association
and the awardee of the NAACP’s
Salute to Women, she extends her
self to the community in organiza
tions like the National Council of
Negro Women.
Annie Brown Kennedy, C’45, also
a Founders Spirit Awardee, named
“the trailblazer,” as partner in the law
