Parents, family, and friends
of Spelmanites visited campus
to celebrate “Spelman’s
Legacy: A Celebration for All
Generations” during Family
Weekend, which occurred
from Feb. 17-19. The week
end was filled with activities,
including campus tours, a
children’s carnival, mother-
daughter pamper party, a spe
cial viewing of “The Gospel”
and culminated with a Sisters
Chapel service on Sunday.
“Family Weekend was
planned by a committee head
ed by Angela Guinyard,” said
Dr. Geneva Baxter, a member
of the committee and associ
ate dean of Undergraduate
Studies. “She did an excellent
job.”
On Friday night, the
Johnnetta Betsch Cole Living
and Learning Center was
transformed into Cafe 350,
where parents enjoyed the
sounds of jazz and blues. The
musicians also gave historical
information on the two genres
of music.
“I’m a great music fan,” said
William Foxx, the father of a
student who transferred to
Spelman in the fall semester,
“It was a show and inform
ative all at once. The
atmosphere was beau
tiful,” said Foxx.
Another major
event of the weekend
was the Parents
Association Meeting,
which exposed parents
and students to the
value of domestic
exchange and studying
abroad.
According
Stephan
Montgomery, co-chair
of the Spelman
College Parents
Association, the
Association provides
input to the senior staff of the
college and addresses the con
cerns of parents.
“The Parents Association
exists so we can have a sense of
what is going on at Spelman,”
she said.
Douglas Stallworth, an
active member of the Parents
Association, has been working
to improve food services,
transportation, and parking
problems.
“The students have prob
lems but don’t know who to
talk to. We work with the
administration to see if we can
change some things that can
improve the college.”
Eloise Alexis, vice president
for Institutional
Advancement, explained that
one of the roles of the Office
of Institutional Advancement
is to build and maintain
bonds throughout the
Spelman community. It
reaches out to parents, stu
dents, faculty, and corpora
tions to better meet the needs
of Spelmanites.
“We are the friend raising
and fund-raising department
of the college,” she said.
Alexis encouraged parents
to take advantage of the
numerous events that take
place on campus not only
during Family Weekend, but
also throughout the year. The
Founders Day Celebration,
Women of Color Leadership
Conference, Class Day and
March Through the Arch
comprise a few of the upcom
ing activities.
In addition, parents were
given information on
Spelman’s campaign to
increase scholarship funds.
One of the events includes a
celebration of gospel music
with Donnie McClurkin.
Alexis encouraged parents to
be active participants in their
daughters’ education and learn

The Spelman Student
Government Association,
Class Council and Miss
Spelman College elections
received the best voter
turnout this year, despite
technical problems with
Spelman e-mails and ballot
links.
As a result, there was no
need for runoff elections,
since winners were chosen by
a majority vote.
According to sophomore
Shannon Cumberbatch,
member of the elections com
mittee, the elections did not
go as expected.
“Although the voter
turnout increased this year,
some people were rebelling
against certain notions of the
candidates qualifications, or
some votes were biased,” she
said. “However, the candi
dates that were selected do fit
the qualifications of their
positions,” she said.
However, in the event of
technical difficulties, other
students had to retrieve the
link and password from the
Office of Student
Activities.
As a result,
voting was extend
ed to Feb. 17.
“I think
online voting does
create some prob
lems, and the elec
tions committee
and Ms. Sheena
Glover worked
hard to create
another option for
voting. Still, there are a lot of
improvements to be made in
the voting process,” said jun
ior Jabrea Bennett, newly
elected SGA vice president.
