A PLAIM TALK.
ON A PLAIN SUBJECT IN PLAIN LAN-
GUAGE.
A winter is just before us with all
of its biting winds, cold, drizzling
rains, sloppy, muddy streets, and
sudden changes of temperature. 'This
will cause at least one-half of the peo
ple to have catarrh, colds, coughs,
pneumonia, or consumption.
'Thousands of poeple will ac
quire some chronic ailment from
which they never recover. Un
less you take the necessary precau
tions the chances are that you (who
read this) will bo one of the unfor
tunate ones. Little or no risk need
be run if l’e-ru-na is kept in the
house and at the first appearance of
any symptom take it as directed on
tho label. No one who values his
welfare should be without a copy of

The Cumberland Presbyterian in
an article setting forth the duty o’
every good citizen to vote, gives the
the following interesting incident. It
shows how the outspoken, determin
ed words and acts of one earnest
man may turn the scales in favor of
t Ipiety and morality. It occurred
sT' |ewhere in Tenn.
“During a recent election on a
moral issue a certain district was
known to be overwhelmingly against
the proposed righteous meas
ure. A Christian citizen, a ruling
elder in the Cumberland Presbyter
ian church, arose .and respectfully
asked that the polls bo opened with
prayer. With uncovered head the offi
cer in charge of the ballot-box said:
Mr. requests that 'the polls be
opened with prayer. He will please
lead in this prayer.” And he did
pray, fervently and faithfully, while
the roughest of the rabble stood
awed into reverential silence. When
the prayer was ended he who offer
ed it approached the ballot-box, cast
his vote for sobriety, and worked un
til the polls were closed, using every
honorable means to secure a majori
ty for the cause he had so zealously
espoused. The leaders of the god
less opposition have not yet ceased
to wonder how it happened that this
district went overwhemly against
them. This incident conveys its own
lesson.”

USING BUSINESS MEN.
In selecting material for the new
City Council of Atlanta, candidates
have been called from almost every
business.
This is most praise-worthy, and
doubly beneficial, in that it gives the
various interests better chance for
representation and insures a more
independent thinking body of men.
Among the most prominent of
those who are expecting to look af
ter the city’s welfare in the new
Council is Mr. W. R. Dimmock, sen
ior member of the wholesale pro
duce firm of Dimmock & Wallace-
Mr. Dimmock is thoroughly identi
fied with the city, having lived here
for nearly 24 years, and if elect
ed to represent the Fourth Ward he
will make a practical and consci
entious councilman. He has been
prominent in local military matters
for years, is also a prominent mem
ber of the Masonic Order, Knights
of Pythias and Independent Order
of Odd Fellows.
Another thing that speaks vol
umes for Mr. Dimmock is the fact
that the men who have had the
most dealings and know him best
are his warmest supporters.
DOOTOB' AND COUNCILMAN.
Among tho candidates being push
cd by their friends to represent them
in the councils of Atlanta, is one of
our most prominent physicians, Dr.
G. G. Roy of tho sixth ward.
I
Or
Some years ago Dr. Roy represent
ed this same ward in the general
council and his friends have not for
gotten the interest he took in city’s
welfare, and of his services then not
one murmur has ever been heard.
Dr. Roy is a prominent member of
the Baptist church and is an active
and conscientious worker.
His views relative to the greatest
good for the masses are broad and
thoughtful, and all conservative
measures looking to the benefit of
Atlanta, or the bettering of her peo
ple meet with his hearty co-operation.
If Dr. Roy is elected to the council
from the sixth she can be assured of
having a capable and earnest advo
cate for the best good to the city.

Mr. Mell has lived in Atlanta all
his life and has been in business for
himself the past five years, previous
to which he was with the firm of

Putting a great truth mildly is to
say that no other one agency has
done, or is now doing so much for
the establishment and improvement
of Sunday-schools in this country
as the American Baptist Publication
Society. Through all the years the
Society has managed to keep in ad
vance of everybody in this impor
tant and most hopeful department
of Christian effort. How many large
efficient, influential Sunday-schools
owe their present efficiency, directly
to this great Society, we have no
means of knowing. How many such
schools, North, South, Bast, and
West, are indebted, for the begining
of their existence, to this same truly
national Society. How many poor
struggling schools are to day being
helped by its donations. Who can
tell? May all such Sunday-schools
grow into great and still greater use
fulness,and may the Society’s ability
for this b lessed work ever increase.
The leading Athetes say that all
sorenes, stiffness or swelling is pre
vented or almost instantaneously re
moved if, after exercising, the mus
cles are thoroughly rubbed with
Pond’s Extract. By its use the mus
cles are made quick and firm, and
one is enabled to take his required
amount of exercise each day, when
without using Pond’s Extract he
would be prevented from work by
lameness or stiffness. Invaluable to
Amateur Atheletes and men in train
ing.

TASKS THAT MUST BE DONE.
Nature has assigned important
tasks to the liver and the bowels,
being mutually dependent upon each
other for the regular and adequate
discharge of these tasks, a cessation
of work by one causes the other to
lapse into inactivity. The tasks of
secretion and evacuation must be
performed, or the system is poisoned
and disordered. Moreover, fatal
inflamation of the bowels or ab
scess of the liver apt to ensue if inac
tion of these organs is allowed to go
unheeded. The dangerous tendency
should be checked at the outset with
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, an anti
bilious specific and laxative without
a peer. Never does this medicine
cause a qualm of the stomach or
uneasiness of the bowels. It doos
its reformatory work pleasantly
though with reasonable activity. It
prevents malaria and rheumatic dis
ease, kidney complaints and reliev
es dyspepsia and nervousness.
EELIGION IN BUSINESS.
w. s. m’neal.
That religion can be successfully
practiced seven days in the week
and in connection with a progressive
business career is well illustrated in
the life of Brother W. S. McNeal,
of whom we give a fairly good pict
ure above. Although not yet forty
years of age, for twenty-two years
he has been an active member of the
Baptist Church. A a few words in
sketch of Brother McNeal will in
terest our readers. Having to be
gin life at the bottom round and at
the early age of seven, ho was de
prived of the privilege enjoyed by
most boys, that of attending school.
He had to educate himself by oc
cupying his spare time in study at
night. How well ho utilized this
leisure can probably be best appreci
ated by visiting and conversing with
him at his place of business. Six
days in the week he can be found at
his largo I’aint, Glass and Wall-pa
per stores, 114-116 Whitehall, where
it lias been his habit for years to get
to business early in the morning and
remain until night.
Considering the very unusual
record, of not having lost a day's
work in nearly thirty-three years,
twenty-one of which ho has l>een the
bead of a firm and the devoted way
he has spent the liberty allowed by
working hours it is truly remarkable
to find such a live, cheerful and en
tertaining talker on religious, busi
ness and political subjects. In ad
dition to being a devout member of
the First Baptist Church of this city,
Brother McNeal has been an aggres
sive Good Templar for nearly twen
ty years ; he also is a member of the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows,
Improved Order of Red Men,
Knights of Pithias, Mystic Circle,
and one of the live members of the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
Brother McNeal’s straightforward
Christian business career has gained
for him a competency and won for
him the confidence and esteem of all,
regardless to sect or class.
