WHAT 13 A COLD ?
THE ANmVER GIVEN INA LECTURE
BY UK. HARTMAN AT THE SURGI-
CAL HOTEL COLUMBUS,OHIO.
A cold is the starting point of
more than half of the fatal illnesses
from November t» May. A cold is
tSie first chapter in the history of
every case of consumption. A cold
is the first stage of chronic catarrh,
the most loathsome and stubborn of
diseases. A cold is the legitmate pa
rent of a large family of diseases
such as bronchitis, pleurisy, pneu
monia, and quinsy. To neglect a
cold is almost suicide. To fail to
provide against this well-nigh ine
vitable evil is dangerous negligence
Pe-ru-na is a safeguard as a preven
tive, a specific as a cure for all cases
of catarrh acute and chronic coughs,
colds, consumption, etc., etc. Every
family should be provided with a
copy of The Family Physician No. 2,
a complete guide to prevent and
cure Winter diseases. (Sent free by
The Pe-ru-na Drug Manufactur
ing Company, Columbus Ohio.
The Now York Tribune says:
“Two instruments not usually asso
ciated in people’s minds with reli
gious rites have recently made their
debut in the musical portions of
divine worship in England. At
York, the other day, the choral ser
vice in the Cathedral was accompan
ied by the bag-pipes of a Scotch
regiment, temporarily stationed in
that anaent city, and the skirl of
the pipe sounded weirdly and strange
through the vaulted nave of the
grand old minister. In Edinburgh
one of the Episcopal churches was
the scene, some Sundays ago, of a
sacred banjo concert.”.
CAT.ARRH, NOT LOCAL, BUT CON
STITUTIONAL.
Dr. Dio Lewis, the eminent Bos
ton physician, in a magazine article
says: “A radical error underlies
nearly all medical treatment of ca
tarrh. It is not a disease of the
man’s noste it is a disease of the man,
showing itself in the nose—a Local
exhibition of a Constitutional trou
ble.” Therfore, ho argues, the use
of snuff and other local application is
wrong; and while they seem to give
temporary relief, they really do
more harm than good. Other
leading authorities agree with Dr.
Lewis. Hence, the only proper meth
od of cure for catarrh is by taking a
constitutional remedy like Hood’s
Sarsaparilla, which reaching every
• part of the body through the blood,
docs eliminate all impurities and
makes the whole man healthier. It
removes the cause of the trouble and
restores the diseased membrane to
proper condition. That this is the
practical result is proven by thous
ands of people who have been cured
of oatai ili by taking Hood’s Satfiapa
rilla.
The Baptist, Baltimore, speakin g
of the speech of Dr. Frost, Cor. Sec
retary, Sunday School Board at the
recent session of the Maryland Bap
tist Union Association, has this to
say about the work of the Board,
and its results. “We record it as
our honest conviction that the Sun
day School Board with its access to
all parts of tho South, with its posi
tion in the midst of the field of its
Sunday school teachings so impreg
nated and combined with missionary
teachings has a work before it which
in far-reaching results cannot be ex
aggerated.”
THE TESTIMONIALS
Publiisbed on behalf of Hood’s Sar
saparilla are as reliable and worthy
your confidence, as if they came from
your best and most trusted neighbor.
They state only the simple facta in
regard to what Hood's Sarsaparilla
has done, always within truth and
reason.
Constipation and all troubles with
th* digestive organs and the liver,
are cured by Hood's Pills. Une
qualled as dinner pill.
Immanuel Church, Little Rook,
Ark., baa purchased and paid for a
beautiful lot. It is located about
one mile from each of th* other
churches, in a rapidly growing part
of the city.
The membership numbers thirty*
with good prospect of increase.
THE CHRIBTIAJN INDEX: THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 10. 1892.
Aluminum, a very valuable meta 1,
of wider application than almost any
other, is extracted from clay which is
to be found everywhere, in unmeas
ured quantities, but it has herefore
been rather a curiosity than a practi
cally useful article, on account of the
diflieulity of separating it from the
clay. Great progress has been
made, and now it is announced that,
a simple and inexpensive process
has been discovered, and we may ex
pect soon to have the benefit of it.
For almost two generation scientific
men have been experimenting for
this end, and have felt they were
near it. Slowly, by diligent study
and work, are all great ends reached
And by such work of men unseen
does God prepare for us what we
need. As the demand of each age
arises he meets it by the results of
labor of which the world at large
knew little. Each worker gathers up
the results of all before him and uses
them until the end is reached. So
every Christian worker contributes to
the great ultimate result in the uni
versal knowledge of God.—United
Presbyterian.

The Rev. Dr. Bennett, vicar of St.
Georges, Worthing, told the Evan
gelical Alliance Conference that he
had got hold of a secret book by a
clergyman of the Church of England,
in which the writer spoke of the
mass and told the clergy to bo care
ful in making the body of Christ
When giving the communion to the
sick the clergyman, after various
idolatrous ceremonies, was instruct
ed to wash his fingers and give the
water to the sick man to drink. This
statement caused a sensation in the
conference.—Canada Presbyterian.
A WASPISH "STING.
What some wag terms “the busi
ncss end of a wasp” stings with
scarcely more acuteness than the
acid eructations of gas from the
stomach to the gullet that are char
acterized as heartburn. Never was
there a case of indigestion without
the symptom. Both cause and effect
are removable by the fine carminative
tonic Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters,
which confer regularity and vigor
upon a disordered and enfeebled
stomaek with certainty and despatch
Besides checking the pranks of a re
belious stomach the Bitters wakes
up a dormant liver, and causes the
bowels to act like clockwork. An
immense reputation has also been
won by this professionally approved
venting malarial trouble, and coun
teracting a tendency to rheumatism
and kidney complaints. Neuralgia
and nervousness are also remedied
by it
The liquefaction of gases is a fact
of recent knowledge. Until a few
years ago oxygen and many other
gases were thought to be “perma
nent,” and not capable of liquefac
tion; but by the combined action of
enormous pressures and low temper
atures, all of them have been chang
ed into the liquid form, and hydro
gen—one of the most refractory—
has even been frozen to a bluish,
metalic looking solid.
During the recent meeting of Dal
las Presbytery, Rev. J. W. Horn
beak, related the remarkable incident
of a lady of eighty-two and a child
of eix years professing religion at
tho same time. In tho same meeting
an aged infidel and a young moralist
were converted. —Cumberland Pres
byterian.
Rev. C. A. Fulton in his report on
Home Missions, read at the late
Maryland Baptist Union Association
says that Maryland this year £ave
to Home missions $12,809.67 against
$5,006.02, last year.
Mrs. A. E. N. Robertson, of Mus
cogee, I. has translated the New
Testament from the original Greek
into the language of the Creek In
dians.
The troubles of the missionaries
in China are not over. A mob of
natives very lately attacted the Rev.
Mr. Phillips and wife, English mis
sionaries, at Kieng Yong, and burned
their house. They would have been
slain but for the protection of the
magistrates, and the good prov
idence which watches over the serv
ants of God.
Rev. S. F. Smith, D. D., author of
“My Country, ‘tis of Thee,” by a
singular coincidence, celebrated his
birthday anniversary on Columbian
day, .Oct. 21. He has reached Ins
85th year, and wrote the national
hymn 60 years ago, while a student
at Andover.
The Board of Education in De
troit, Mich., has adopted a resolution
which practically excludes Catholics
from teaching in the public schools.
