I CIIALO6UB-C,
FROM MISSISSIPPI,
It is about time that you should
hear again from this part of our
Southland, I suppose, Bro. Editor.
Well, there are some things worthy
of note to be reported; all showing
progress in good works. First in
order conies tho triumph of morality
in the City election last month. Not
that everything was carried; but the
chief offices, with anti-saloon men.
And then came tho defeat of the
last application for liquor license,
the two now in force extending only
to April next. We will, therefore,
soon have a “dry town”; except from
jug invasions. But the business is
falling away, through prohibition re
sults, and the existence here of a
prosperous Keeley Cure Institute,
which is saving drunkards.
Next, Meridian succeeded in rais
ing the for Mississippi
College, and tendered it and the land
required to the committee. It re
mains now tor the Trustees to make
arrangements for the removal. There
has been some unpleasant contro
versy about the removal, which has
in the main taken tho wrong direc
tion. This city has no quarrel with
the present location; but simply ac
cepts a proposition of the Conven
tion. Our people feel that they
have done their part, and that under
serious drawbacks and discourage
ments. They now propose to rest
on what has been done, and have no
contentions with opposers. Such
questions are always vexing; but the
Lord can bring ordtr out of confus
ion, ami will direct His people
aright.
And now conies the visit of Dr.
Powell. He preached at 41st, Ave
nue; loth, Avenue and at the First
Church. A liberal response was
made at all three places; over $700.-
0(1 beint; pledged. This on the pres
sure of raising funds for the College;
rebuilding the largest church and
mission churches, practically, to help,
is marvelous for our denomination
here. Business has not been as
prosperous this season as was hoped,
yet the city is growing and new en
terprises are being pushed. 'Fhc
burning of a large Wheel and Spoke
Factory several weeks since is one
of our misfortunes, throwing many
employees out of work. But the
R. R. Shops have been enlarged
and a new plant for handling ami
dressing lumber on a large scale has
been established recently.
Lastly our Baptist Union has just
held an important meeting. It has
secured the services of Elder ,1. R-
Farish to supply South Side, where
it is building him a Pastor’s Home.
'Die Highland Church has also called
him to its pastorate; and he is already
on the field. Elder J. 1). Cook
former pastor of these churches
lately moved to Arkansas, much to
the regret of our people. Moro
recently still, Elder S. O. G. Ray,
who was missionary of the Chiek
asahary Association last year, has
accepted a similar position i n Ahi
bama and has moved to Livingston,
Elder J. B. Gambrell still makes this
city his home, though keeping up
his New Orleans Institute.

THE CHRISTIAN INDEX: FEBRUARY 2. 1893.
Bradley has moved to Brundidge,
and Schramm, goes to Phcenix City.
Roby resigning at Seale, Oswitchle
and Camp Hill, goes to Opelika. Dr.
Shaffer will serve Camp Hill, Dade
ville and Good Water.
The churches at Seale, Oswitchie
and Mt. Lebanon, will form a good
field for some good preacher. I
have taken the church at Daviston
Bro. C. S Johnson serves in addi
tion to his other churches Sylacog
ga and Springville. The church at
Tray is an excellent church and is
yet without a pastor. Birmingham
has not yet a pastor to succeed Dr.
Pickard, who went to Broadway
church in Louisville. The Orphans
Home has been located at Evergreen
and A. T. Stewart appointed as fi
nancial Secretary. A sister Wood,
son leaves all her property at death
to the Home. Tho severe weather
has checked np church work and im
peded the progress of the centennial
movement. If the old tradition
holds true—“a hard winter for a
good crop,” we may see a better state
of affairs by another year.
A bill pending before our Legisla
ture to stop Freight trains on Sun
day is calling out different opinions
as to the rights of legislation on reli
gious subjects. If such legislation is
questionable, there is not legislation
upon any subject of morals or right
questionable, since the Bible is the
standard for all.

BAPTIST STATISTIC! >-
According to the Baptist Year Book,
just published the statistics of tho de
nomination in Great Britain and Ireland,
are as follows:
In England there are to-day 1,502
churches; 273(1 chapels; 883,828 sittings
in chapels; 204,003 members;34,924 Sun

and 1,181 pastors. Including Wales and
Monmouthshire, Scotland, Ireland and
the Channel Islands, tho totals, are as
follows: 2,803 churches! 3,754 chapels;
1,237,012 sittings in chapels; 337,409
members; 4(1,927 Sunday-school teachers:
487,801 Sunday scholars, and 1858 pas
tors. As compared with last year, these
figures show an increase in the sittings
of 12,515; in membership of 3,24(1; Sun
day-school teachers 143: Sunday’ scholars
3,880: and pastors of 17; while there is a
decrease of 9 in churches, and of 44 in
chapels. In the whole world there are
now 44,558 Baptist churches, with 4,013,
089 members and 28,878 pastors; each of
these being a largo increase on former
years. During the past twelve months
:>(> new chapels have been erected, at a
cost of t'58,070, providing sittings for 17,
450; and 1'04,302 has been paid towards
wiping off or diminishing chapel debts.
The Baptist Missionary Society has at
tho present time at work in the foreign
field 125 missionaries. Forty-one min
isters have died since the last handbook
was published, including Mr. C. 11.

From Florida— One important feat,
tire of our late State Convention was tho
“Pastors conference.” It has one day
before the convention nnd diacussea
subjects bearing on the Pastoral relation
and questions of general interest An
other feature of interest is the Lifu Aa-
surance Association from which already
good results have occurred. It has a
membership of 140
Our people are hopeful, though the
past year was disastrous! The cotton
crop, though only one-tffird, brought a
double price. The orange crop only half,
the hogs died from cljtolora—but the
timber interst, turpentine farms and
phosphate fields keep cheerful and hope
ful. Church building is not on the de
cline, some churches own land. There
is a growing interest among our young
preachers in education. Brotiter
Ward Shuffield was recently commended
by his church—accompanied by a small
collection for his benefit —to Stetson
University. B. R. Mosely.
Fort White Fla.,
THE NEED OF HOUSES OF WORSHIP
IN FLORIDA-
I am sure that our greatest need just
now is houses of worship for Baptists
The material interests of the State are
developing, its salubrious climate be
coming better known, so that for reasons
of health and wealth,;, the country is fill
ing up with new towns rising up here
and there as if by magic. Tito denomi
nation that is first to build respectable
and comfortable houses at such places,
of course has greatly the advantage. In
some of our new towns we were the first,
or with the first, in building as in De-
Land, Kissimmee and Other places: and
now we have self-sustaining and mission
supporting churches, some of these now
having to enlarge their houses.
I could use profitably and judiciously,
$50,000 in six months at Appalaclticola,
Carrabelle, Cedar Keys, St. Petersburg,
Braidcntown, Palmetto, Punta Gorda
and Fort Myers, dh the Gulf coast aud
Titusville (a county .town) Daytona ,New
Smyrna and St. Augustine, also a county
town, and the oldest place on the conti
nent and one of the most largely attend
ed resorts in the Union. Besides these
there are numbers of places in the inte
rior where we cannot make any progress
or establish ourselves till a house can be
had, aud the little nucleus, sometimes
organized and sometimes not, cannot
build without help' in gifts or loans.
Our people are willing, but the de
mands arc larger in proportion to our
numbers and means, titan in most of the
older States. Besides a good many of
our cliurclies in tho larger places, as
Lake City, Gainesville, Orlando, and
Tampa, are compelled to build anew, or
else much enlarge and improve their
houses, and so cannot help others, but
need held themselves, as in Jacksonville
especially, and Pensacola.
During tho ten ye.ars of our work in
the State, more has been done in per.
manently establishing the cause in Im
portant places, by aiding in the building
of houses of worship, than by sending
out missionaries, Which, in many eases,
armimils to but little till a house is built.
In many of the places named, we would
now have had effective cliurclies could
we have built houses some years ago.
